PETITION:
http://www.millionformarriage.org
Dear Friend,
I believe that ALL Americans, including gays and lesbians, deserve the rights, responsibilities, and privileges that come with marriage. And right now, we have an unprecedented opportunity to make that dream a reality. Please, join me in adding your voice to a million voices raised in support of civil
marriage for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender couples at www.MillionForMarriage.org .
This week, it's especially important that we reach 300,000 signatures. Right-wing extremists are lobbying Congress right now during their so-called "Marriage Protection Week." Please, help drown out their anti-GLBT voices! The time to act is now!
There are more than 1,000 federal protections and responsibilities denied to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families because they cannot legally marry in this country. Here are just a few:
>Ability to make decisions on a partner's behalf in a medical emergency.
petition for partner to immigrate.
>Up to 12 weeks leave from work to care for a seriously ill partner or parent of a partner.
>Parenting responsibilities of children brought into a family through birth, adoption, surrogacy or other means.
>Ability to purchase continued health coverage for a domestic partner after the loss of a job.

dutchjim 03-08-2006, 02:54 PM Signed and forwarded. This is so very important for us all.
Rights taken for granted by married couples are denied to us.
If your partner is incarcerated in another state, they will not be able to parole to your state and you. The Interstate Compact for parole transfer recognizes immediate family (parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, etc.), and legally married couples, only.
londonlimey 06-09-2006, 02:50 AM Done and dusted!...It's a pity the US government dont share the same feelings as the UK's towards civil marriages, so let's hope that will all change!
I just received an email today! Then came to PTO to see if it was already posted, and it was!!
Going to go sign and forward it on!!

RayHill 08-15-2006, 04:45 PM Alright, now that I have signed the petition, would someone send me a man?
MrJustice 08-20-2006, 08:25 AM I'd just like to make a commentregarding the petition which, naturally, I support both as a lawyer and as a human being. In Canada, we made what I consider to be a monumental mistake in using the word "marriage". This got the "religious right" (you Americans know all about them) very upset and they are now pressuring the new Prime Minister to reverse the same sex marriage legislation and he certainly appears bent on doing exactly that. I feel that if we had simply referred to our proposal as a "civil union", the vast majority of Canadians would have strongly supportive the initiative. The institution of marriage, however, would appear to have no room for same sex marriages. So why ruin our chances in the U.S. as we did here. After all, what most GLBT couples want is equality, the same rights extended to them that heterosexual couples enjoy. Is it worth taking the risk simply because of a word? Just a thought.
Peace and love from north of the border

She'sMyAngel 07-08-2008, 10:17 PM Awesome - signed and passed on. In New Zealand we are very lucky that we do have a Civil Union Act (This also applies to Hetero DeFacto Relationships that chose not to marry.) Which means that I can be my girls next of kin (If she was here with me and me her still) and we share property rights and the like. It's amazing to have recognition of your relationship. We are also encouraged to adopt here, the amount of Gay adoptions is extremely high against some other groups. God Bless and Good luck with this.
