I am a friend of a Chinese family and they asked for me to visit them when their daughter returns from college. But I have a sex offense conviction from 1994. I am off paper. No more parole, no state registration, I have totally fulfilled my obligation to the state and I can get a passport even. But what about the actual visa to enter China. Better yet to leave China when my visit is over? I did 2 years in an american prison, I don't want to spend any time in a chinese prison.
Any suggestions??

I would see if you can get some advice from a specialist in Chinese visa regulations... if you can find one.
The other thing that you could do is google the internet for some further hints and advice. From what I have read if you are only going as a visitor the checks are not as stringent, but if you are going for work or study the checks are deeper.
Personally, I would take some advice from the US travel advisories - sorry not to have more details than that.
Try here: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1089.html
Hope this helps.

I can actually help you... maybe. lol :)
I traveled in 2004 to adopt my daughter.
If you can get a passport, you can PROBABLY get the visa. It is a gamble of course, but you can try to have it expedited so you can know the answer sooner. We walked ours through the consolate to save time.
I had a misdemeanor arrest and they did pick up on it. It was a traffic misdemeanor and I paid the fine and to be honest, forgot about it. It was over ten years before we even applied to adopt her. lol
You use the same visa to leave and travel within China as you do to enter so if they will let you enter, they will let you out.
We were there 2 weeks. AMAZING adventure. We went to Beijing, Xi'An, and Guangzhou. :)
