The long arm quilting machine is an industrial sewing machine (with a long throat) that has a worktable upon which several fabric rollers are attached. The sewing machine moves along bars (or rails) attached to a metal (or sturdy wood) frame. The worktable size can range from ten to fourteen feet in length and can accommodate a king-sized quilt. The quilt top, batting, and the backing of the quilt are stretched over each of the fabric rollers and then the “sandwich” (the top, batting, and backing) are quilted together via the sewing machine. The quilted area is rolled onto a take-up roller so the rest of the "sandwich" can be worked on. There are patterns that one can use to “trace” (using a laser pointer) and the sewing machine will sew these patterns onto the quilt with thread. Long arm quilting machines typically come with electronic controls that allow one to adjust the fabric and the stitch size. I am a quilter and would love to have a long arm, but they are expensive (anywhere from $7,000 - $23,000) and take up a lot of room. I guess the investment is worth it if one is gonna start a quilting business. Someone in my quilting circle has one and it is really cool! http://thm-a01.yimg.com/image/2cb041f196f5efa6 (http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9G_bF6fFMVKJV0Ag8KJzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBpZm5udGl 1BHBvcwM1BHNlYwNzcgR2dGlkAw--/SIG=1i30i5dv6/EXP=1254516255/**http%3A//images.search.yahoo.com/images/view%3Fback=http%253A%252F%252Fimages.search.yahoo .com%252Fsearch%252Fimages%253F_adv_prop%253Dimage %2526va%253Dlong%252Barm%252Bquilting%252Bmachine% 2526fr%253Dyfp-t-101%26w=2160%26h=1440%26imgurl=www.quiltingbycarla .com%252Fimages%252FQuilts%252FGammil%252520Long%2 52520Arm.JPG%26rurl=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.quiltin gbycarla.com%252Ffaqs.htm%26size=700k%26name=Gammi l%2BLong%2BArm%2B...%26p=long%2Barm%2Bquilting%2Bm achine%26oid=2cb041f196f5efa6%26fr2=%26no=5%26tt=7 566%26sigr=117tvsjs6%26sigi=11tch399k%26sigb=136dq 3qd1) sidewalker 10-01-2009, 07:43 PM wow.........I sort of THOUGHT that may be what it was, but really was not sure if it was me just guessing. but hey?! what the heck? i got it right. great explaination (terrible spelling on my part) beccasmom 10-08-2009, 09:56 AM While in the orthopedists office waiting for my husband just the other day, they had a quilting magazine on the rack with an in-depth article about those long arm machines and it was amazing.
