babieboo, have you used this program? Are they able to send to prisons who generally accept books only from bookstores? What kind of books do they send? I would love to find out state by state what prisons you can send used paperbacks to. I'd love to see people buy up books at garage sales, goodwill, etc and send them to men who don't have a TV, or are in ad seg. In IL we can send books directly to the prison.

I just got off the phone with the Prison Book Program office and yes it is all for FREE...all the person(inmates) have to do is write to the address I listed, what type of books they like(westerns, romance, nonfiction, etc), list restrictions( no hard covers only softcovers), and then their address and ID number! I am so happy now. so Please spread the word cuz she said they really would like to help all!

Hey this is wonderful. I'm sure there will be lots of use for these books. Is there a place one could donate books for other inmates or $ to purchase books? My baby loves to read.. Iperfer this to any other rec activities (except his workingout ) it's food for the brain..Thank you soooo much for sharing this :} .. Will pass on. God Bless.

Jmora, you might call the prison your guy is in and see if you can donate books for their library. In Il, you can send used books. After I figured this out, I went to good will several times, getting lots of thriller types and other books and sent boxes of them to three men I know in IL prisons. I told them to pass them on, and at last one has told me that is what he does. I was also able to send him some of my paperbacks. A shoe box full of books sent media rate was aboout $2.50 a box.

HI,

What kind of books do they offer? I have been trying to find out what the library is like at Ware Prison but haven't been successful. My son is a reader and I cant imagine anyone not being allowed to read.

Thanks for the information.

http://www.naljor.com/resourcedirectory.htm

This is a link that is full of free information for our loved ones. The list is extensive, the first part being spiritually based.

If you scroll down, you will find many resources for free books for your loved one. Save it to your favorites list for future reference, and pass it along.

There is another organization called the College Guild, PO Box 6448 Brunswick, ME 04011.

They offer some free correspondence courses for inmates such as drawing. None of these are accredited courses for college, but they are free. They have a waiting list, but if you send a request, they will respond. They rely on donations to keep them going, but for a free course in anything for the incarcerated, I sent them some money to help out. Tam

They have everything. Nonfiction and fiction. Make sure your son lists the provisions and the rules for what kinds of books he can have...some prisons will only allow softcovers.
