TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) - Kansas' top prison official says additional budget cuts could force the state to consider shorter sentences for convicted criminals.
Corrections Secretary Roger Werholtz told lawmakers Monday that if the prison system must absorb more cuts, it will have to consider reducing supervision of parolees and closing the minimum-security prison in Winfield.
Werholtz testified before the House Appropriations Committee, which is gathering information on the effects of past budget cuts.
The secretary said his department has already cut programs for inmates and closed minimum-security prison units in three communities.http://www.ksn.com/news/local/story/Kan-prisons-chief-Cuts-may-shorten-sentences/TNjX7vm3SUqQaJWLKBqPHg.cspx
I looked and it appears that the "Kansas Criminal Code Recodification
Commission Subcommittee" is meeting in Topeka on the 25th and the 26th. This could be to discuss what is mentioned in the KSN article above, I am not sure.
