Megan Wants a Millionaire star Ryan Jenkins wanted for murder of ex-wife
A reality TV contestant was on the run last night after being charged with the gruesome murder of his swimsuit model ex-wife.
Ryan Jenkins, 32, who appeared in the series Megan Wants a Millionaire about a woman seeking to land a wealthy bachelor, is thought to have fled to his native Canada after the mutilated body of Jasmine Fiore was discovered stuffed in a bloody suitcase in a California rubbish bin last weekend. Ms Fiore had been strangled and her badly-beaten, naked body was found without teeth or fingers.
Ms Fiore married Mr Jenkins in a quickie Las Vegas ceremony this year. The couple split after two months and he was later charged with attacking her. But they got back together after he returned from filming another reality TV series and the couple booked into a San Diego hotel on August 13.
Mr Jenkins checked out alone the next morning. The day after, a man looking for recyclables discovered the suitcase.
Mr Jenkins was described as a "smooth operator" investment banker worth $2.5 million. He appeared in the first three episodes of the kitschy dating series, which VH1 has now taken off air.
According to reports, the couple were seen arguing the final night she was seen alive. ABC News said that they had a "blow-out fight in front of everyone" when they were out playing poker. A source said: "She was being very rude and kept putting Ryan down. It was really awkward. She has a cutting sense of humour. He was getting really angry, and it totally set the tone for the rest of the evening."
Mr Jenkins, who is thought to be armed, reported his ex-wife missing to police the day Ms Fiore's body was found and then fled Southern California. He apparently drove 1,000 miles north to Washington State and took a speedboat to a peninsula on the border, where he walked into Canadian territory.
A car and empty boat trailer belonging to Mr Jenkins were found at a marina in the remote northwest Washington town of Blaine. A Canadian police official said that ground, air and dog units are involved in the search for him. He has family in the Greater Vancouver area.
If Mr Jenkins is arrested in Canada, California can request that he be extradited to the US, but only with reassurances from authorities that he would not face the death penalty.
The victim’s friends and family made a tearful appeal for any information leading to Mr Jenkins’s arrest. “This message goes out to the family, his mother and father and to the friends that are helping him try to leave this country. Ryan Jenkins is an animal, what he has done to Jasmine is unspeakable,” said Robert Hasman, a former boyfriend of Ms Fiore.
It emerged yesterday that Jenkins also had a criminal history in his hometown of Calgary. He was sentenced to 15 months of probation in January 2007 after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman. When he was sentenced, the judge ordered him to undergo psychological counselling for domestic violence and attend outpatient treatment for sex addiction, according to court documents.
51 Minds, the dating show’s production company, said Mr Jenkins would never have been accepted for its show if the company had known of his criminal history and that it was investigating the system of background checks.

The dingy motel room where reality TV star suspected of murdering Playboy model wife was found hanged.
The body of Ryan Jenkins, 32, was discovered in a room at the Thunderbird Motel in Hope, British Columbia after more than a week on the run from police.
He was wanted for the grisly murder of his wife, 28-year-old swimsuit model Jasmine Fiore, whose naked and mutilated body was found over a week ago in a Los Angeles suburb.
Fiore could only be identified by the serial numbers on her breast implants as her teeth and fingertips had been removed in a bid to conceal her identity. The death of Jenkins ended a six day international manhunt.
