Can someone send me easy directions from Tulare to Corcoran? I was given two routes: (1) CA-137W to King Avenue (back-road, seems confusing) -and-(2) 99N to 198W to 43S (highway, more driving time). Which is the most direct way...that won't get me lost? Thanks!

Have you tried getting directions off the net? I would like to know where Tulare is because when I stay out in Corcoran for the weekend it is sooo boring with nothing to do! But I come from the Antelope Valley area. Sorry I couldnt help ya!

PrisonShrink,
It's all back roads through farm and dairy country with nothing but cows in sight no matter which way you go.

And I am kind of chicken -- being a woman alone in a strange place, so I like the straight shot (direct route) too where there are no turns where I would have a chance to get lost. :)

I haven't gone 198, but I did look at it on my map and it looks like you have some twists and turns there which, for me, would indicate an opportunity to get lost.

I have gone 137 and 144 and can tell you about those.

There are a few twists and turns if you go 228 to 137. Once you make the designated turns in Tulare, it winds through dairy country and you make the one turn from 228 to 137, but it is marked. There are clear signs. But then when you get into corcoran it gets all screwed up and suddenly there are no signs. I didn't like this way at all as there were a lot of zigzags and then I ended up having to go through town and then back track to the prison. It was a good thing I had been there before or I would have been very lost! And you can't drive very fast going this way. The roads have curves and potholes and are narrow.

I prefer to go 10 minutes down 99S then take 144 West (Poplar Avenue). It is a straight shot to the prison as 144 actually turns from Poplar to Quebec Ave. It takes you right to the door but you are coming in from the back side and never even have to go into the town of Corcoran. You will see the prison on your right. You can't miss it, believe me. It's about 15 or 20 minutes down 144 and it's a good road (compared to the other way!) and you can get up there and do 55 most of the way.

It's about the same amount of driving time going either 137 or 144...25-30 minutes from Tulare with no fog, no traffic, and no farm vehicles.

When you get to the prison, pay attention to which visiting building you need to go to and park accordingly...there are different buildings for different yards. The signs are on your right to direct you as you drive in the parking area. A, B, and C are the first building, I think. Anyway, it's clearly marked. There is usually a line forming at about 7:45.

Enjoy your visit! :)
If you need anything else feel free to PM me.

Ask someone in town(Tulare) which road turns into Kansas ave( I know its one of the main roads..The name changes into Kansas ave when you get into Kings co. from Tulare Co. )go down this road West around 10-15 Mi. until ya get to 43 and make a left......Drive about 10-15 miles .. You'll see Corcoran and just drive a few miles past town!! Ya cant miss it, Its right off Highway 43 to the right....Good luck!!!
