Tinkerbell 01-14-2004, 07:33 AM My husband was moved from the main unit to the work camp about 2 years ago. Back then, the visits were very good, officers didn't mess with you; I'm not sure how it is now. I do know that you should get there early, the line is usually pretty long and they are slow even though they are doing the electronic check in. Hope this helps a little. Tina hisheartztwin 01-14-2004, 08:49 AM Thanks for the info it does help I didnt know anything, and what is electronic check in? hisheartztwin 01-14-2004, 08:50 AM I apologize for the typo's , I cant find the edit button on this new version, I ment to say Does anyone know how the visiting works at Avon correctional Mike 01-14-2004, 09:32 AM :) I used to visit the Main Unit there, from Sept. of 2002 to Feb. of 2003. It's very laid back. I have heard from guys at various other camps that Avon Park is a good place to do time. The Main Unit, the Youth Camp, and the Work Camp, are all inside a military base. So when you drive up to the main gate, you show the guard your ID and tell him which camp you're going to. He gives you a pass that goes on your dashboard, and he takes down your car's tag number. Then you drive to the appropriate camp (about 1 mile). You'll see people lined up at the gate. If it's your first time there it'll take awhile because they have to take your photo, put you in the computer, etc. But after that it's quick to get in. You show your yellow card (which they'll issue on the first visit) scan your hand, go thru the metal detector, get patted down, etc., all right there outside the gate. The staff has always been very friendly; in fact, one lady there always said, "Enjoy your visit! :) "The VP consists of one large indoor room, where you are free to roam around. And then there is the outside area, where smoking is allowed. The unisex restroom is always locked, so you have to get the guard at the desk to open it for you. But usually people will form a line there, and as one comes out they'll hold the door for the next person. The atmosphere is very laid back. But if anyone does too much touching the guards are quick to stop it. One warning: do NOT touch the chain link fence! They'll get on you for that. I will PM you with directions. I'm in the Tampa area.Does anyone know who the visiting works at Avon Correctional institute? |
