Just wanted to let everybody know that vlcoffman, a member of PTO, had her editorial published in one of Alabama's largest newspapers - the Montgomery Advertiser. The editorial is on what to do about the prison overcrowding issues in Alabama and I think it's wonderful she brought a sensible approach to this situation.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
Here is the letter:
Stop locking up nonviolent offenders
The first thing I would do if I were trying to relieve the conditions of Alabama prisons would be to start enforcing HB61 where non violent offenders could be released and become active members of the community. As it stands, there are many inmates incarcerated who lack education, rehabilitation, and drug treatment programs.
If we had these programs instead of “lock them up and throw away the key” many inmates would not return to the system, which would only cost the taxpayers more money in the long run.
