Beaumont Enterprise 3/15/02 The two men were accused of violating the civil rights of inmate Micheal McCoy, who died from injuries suffered in a beating.

BEAUMONT - Two former guards at the state prison unit in Livingston have entered guilty pleas in federal court here in connection with the 1994 beating death of an inmate. Joel Lambright, 28, and Alex Torres, 34, were accused of violating the civil rights of inmate Micheal McCoy, who died from injuries suffered in a beating.

The two men were convicted of manslaughter in state court and served shock probation sentences of three months. Lambright, from Corrigan, pleaded guilty to a civil rights violation and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Torres, from Hillister, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate an inmate's civil rights.

He faces a five-year sentence and a $250,000 fine. The pleas were entered Wednesday before U.S. District Court Judge Howell Cobb, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Texas Inmate Michael McCoy weighed less than 130 lbs and was suffering from cancer at the time they beat him to death.
