A former chief deputy in Richland and Anderson counties will spend at least seven years in prison after admitting he robbed four banks around Columbia.
Prosecutors say 51-year-old Mike Temple agreed to plead guilty last week in federal court. A sentencing hearing has not been scheduled. They say Temple left a typewritten note in his car when he went to rob a bank. They say it included a confession and a list of people to call in case Temple died in a holdup.
Federal sentencing guidelines mean Temple will serve at least seven years in prison for carrying a gun during a violent crime.
Temple spent 14 years with the Richland County Sheriff's Department, rising to chief of detectives. He left in 1988 to become chief deputy in Anderson County, and moved back to the Midlands after deciding not to run for sheriff in 1996.
