Overcrowding in Taiwan's correctional facilities has become so severe that many facilities average out to less than 1.65 square-meters per detainee, a report published by the Budget Center of the Legislative Yuan pointed out.
Minister of Justice Wang Ching-feng has taken the issue very seriously and has said that many institutions with enough space for only 2000 people have been packed with 3000.
The center expressed concern over the possible adverse effects of overcrowding on rehabilitation education, skills training, and counseling, as well as an increased risk in prisoner management.
