View Full Version : CA Lifers Call to Action
desertmoonwoman 05-10-2009, 05:22 PM 2 Workshops will be held to assist us in the CA Lifer process. I think this will be well worth attending because with Marsy's Law your Lifer may have to wait 15 years between parole hearings!

Resah 05-11-2009, 10:20 PM This looks wonderful. My love is a lifer in California but I live in another state about 1000 miles away. If there is any information you can share with us after the meetings, I would be very interested. Even if I can't be present for workshops and rallies, I can certainly write letters and offer support in other ways.
Peace...
Resah

iwiley22 05-27-2009, 02:29 PM hey all im not sure if i missed the date but i was one that was active out there getting people to sign petitions last year. i have been without a computer for over six months just got back on line. i dont have any of my old e-mail addresses im sort of lost right now. any info would be greatly appreciated at this time. my husband is a lifer so am I. I have ofetn asked why lifers are not the only ones getting visits. the way i see it they are to spend most of or all their life in prison so who better then them would need the visits. this has never made since to me. anyway once again any info is appreciated
LovingGLJ 05-27-2009, 04:40 PM You can read about this here....
She was the first member of a victim's family ever to speak at a parole hearing and make a victim's impact statement, in the state of California. Doris actively campaigned to see that a law was passed to allow written or oral information about the impact of the crime on the victim and the victim's family at the sentencing hearing and parole hearing of their victimizer. The law was then picked up by the rest of the states in the nation and now victims and relatives of victims are able to have a voice at the trial and the parole hearings of the person who victimized them or their loved ones.
She worked to have conjugal visits for violent offenders rescinded.

outinaussie 05-31-2009, 05:37 AM so did anyone here get to attend any of the sessions??? just wanted to ask how it all went???
desertmoonwoman 05-31-2009, 10:07 AM I did not get to attend, however I have been in contact with the organisation. They will be sending me an outline and I will post it when I get it. They are trying to gather people to paint a picture of the incarcerated and the families and what the realities are. They want to reach out to the voters and tell them what it is like to have someone who has been going to school and have trades etc... and be denied after 20 years. They want people to know locking up people and not using rehabilitation is not the answer.
Most of the people who work there are formally incarcerated individuals, so they understand first hand.... They also need donations, they are working on a shoe string. I would like to help them get our families out to vote.... traditionally we are not doing that, we have to vote to make change happen and play our part.
As soon as I get the info I will post, so until then keep the faith!
iwiley22 05-31-2009, 12:54 PM hey all the meeting was outstanding.. there was alot of people there. information was plenty. alot of released lifers was also present. there was also workshops , flyers, business cards given out. there was also another date set for july 18 the in L.A. again. they are looking for people with real support willing to do anything to get their loved one home. they do need donations as well. the money goes toward them spreading the word. i put fifty but it felt like only five. the lawyer there was very helpful. i found out that lifers lost their family visit do to someone campaign agaist the Manson family continuing to have children and were becoming wards of the state. no one was ever killed or raped by alifer on a family visit. also this is not a law but a issue that was passed by the board of prisons so how does it still exsist? there was alot more. so much more. there was a nice turn out over hundred people raised about 770.00 dollars. there are alot of e-mails to post for future contact. i wll try to post them later.
desertmoonwoman 05-31-2009, 01:07 PM Thank you for the input iwiley22! When I talked with them I suggested posting info on their website, they do not have the know how. As soon as I take the class on how to create pages, I may not have money to donate but help like that is priceless. Yes, they will give you a sense of hope so keep checking in and I will post any info they give me too!
iwiley22 05-31-2009, 01:23 PM thank you as well there was some one there who had the know how on doing web pages so she is suppose to take this lifers action hopefully to the next level. as I said there were so many groups qou there i dont even know where to begin,

i agree with if one dosent have $$$$, they can help out in other ways that could end up being more valuable than any $$$ you could have given...
heavenlyflower2 06-01-2009, 05:22 PM What an experience and what an absolute motivation. There is definite power in numbers and the information that was shared is beyond value. We all know that CA is in an economic CRISIS! As I'm sure many have thought of and as was pointed out at the meeting if there was ever a time to act with a sense of urgency now is the time, a threat from the Gov. of releasing inmates is like music to my ears, I just wish it was a lot more lifers finally walking out the doors after a hard lesson learned!I will be glad to scan and email any of the info I took home or a copy of my (messy) notes to anybody that wishes to have it. Take care and keep talking about it everyone, talking leads to action and action is what we need.
brownie74 06-01-2009, 09:46 PM hey all the meeting was outstanding.. there was alot of people there. information was plenty. alot of released lifers was also present. there was also workshops , flyers, business cards given out. there was also another date set for july 18 the in L.A. again. they are looking for people with real support willing to do anything to get their loved one home. they do need donations as well. the money goes toward them spreading the word. i put fifty but it felt like only five. the lawyer there was very helpful. i found out that lifers lost their family visit do to someone campaign agaist the Manson family continuing to have children and were becoming wards of the state. no one was ever killed or raped by alifer on a family visit. also this is not a law but a issue that was passed by the board of prisons so how does it still exsist? there was alot more. so much more. there was a nice turn out over hundred people raised about 770.00 dollars. there are alot of e-mails to post for future contact. i wll try to post them later. I learned alot especially about Marcy's law. My husband went to initial bop hearing in feb/09. He was suppose to see the board in October/2008 therefore he qualifies not to have prop 9 affect him. bop hearing was delayed due to back log. The deal about this was made 03/27/09, After hubby's hearing, so he was found unsuitable for parole, told by BOP that he can file paperwork to ask for a hearing in two years, if denied, they'll see him in 15. NOT. I sent my Hubby the info to send UnCommon Law attorney's office as suggested on the flier to ensure he's not left out. Spoke to him on Sunday, and this certainly made his day. His MEPD was 09/2007, he lost time for write ups pushing him to 10/2008 for BOP hearing. He still beat the Dec18/2008 date when Marcy came into effect. I told him to spread the word to other inmates who may qualify so they're not overlooked. Restored some of his hope with that info.
brownie74 06-01-2009, 09:49 PM Also, I am working towards my Husband's release. My Hubby and His co-defendant were tried together, My Hubby got 25L and Co-Def 15L. Co def was released two years later through appeal using "proximate cause". My Hubby's attorney used another appeal approach unsuccessfully (Ineffective Counsel is what I call it) and 18 1/2 years later Hubby still remains. His co def got a reversal, AQUITTAL. They used his co-defendants actions in conjunction with my Hubby's to convict my Hubby (neither testified in their trial). If they convicted my Hubby through a sequence of events stating with the actions of "Both" of them causing death of a guy (A Bar Fight), co-def's actions now can't be used due to reversal, then My Hubby's actions are now "INVALID" and the events portrayed for conviction no longer amounts to a valid conviction. The prosecutor wanted to retry co-def but the courts affirmed reversal stating that there was no new evidence that D.A. could bring forth, therfore aquittal stands. After that, my Hubby gave up hope after his denial, and ended up in the SHU for 7 years at Pel Bay. He went in at 22 and now 40years younger. His initial deal from D.A. was 4 years followed by Deportation. He Lost Big Time gambling on trial. And , trial transcripts states that forenscis could not tell if My Hubby or His co-def's "Hit" caused the fatal injury to the victim. They lied at trial stating my HUBBY WAS "A SELF PROCLAIMED KARATE EXPERT" POLICE SAID HE TOLD THEM THAT. LIARS. MY HUBBY HISPANIC AND CO DEF WAS too/VICTIM WAS WHITE. NO MINORITIES ON JURY........ I attend a UC university in the evenings working towards a 3rd college degree (B.A. in Legal Studies) to help him and other lifers by learning research methods and surrounding myself with other Law Students and Professors who can be a Tremendous Asset to Our Lifers. I work full time, single mom of two out here, go to school during evenings, Tired but Not Defeated until I bring MY Hubby Home/ going for the same as co-def. If that won't happen, then possible sentence commutation to manslaughter if courts won't budge? If the latter can happen, Mexico here I come because Me and My Hubby are two peas in a pod.....
