The computer says my daughter was moved from Plane State Jail to Goree unit but also says that Goree is a male prison. How long do the females stay there or is this just a gliche. I called both Plane and Goree and cant get any info until Monday.

Goree is a real strange unit. They house both male and female prisoners, although they are well separated. When I was there, sometime I would see females on the yard through my cell window. Or pass someone in the hall. There would be like 40 or 50 of us guys headed to chow and a female would be coming back from medical. The officers would shout "everyone turn around and face the wall". We weren't even supposed to look at the females.

Goree is one of the oldest units in the system. None of the females are permanently assigned there, they are simply en route to somewhere else. Could be there 1 day or up to 3 weeks.

I thought I would add to what Mark said here. Besides being a transfer unit for women, there are some women housed at Goree who have cancer and are undergoing chemo.

Making sure that the men and women inmates have no contact is a top priority. They make the inmates clear the halls before a woman walks down it, or like Mark said they will make them turn and face the wall if they can not clear the men away. They have separate chow halls, dorms, visitation areas, etc.

While Goree is the 2nd to the oldest unit in TDCJ, the structure that is old is only a small part of the compound. Many of the buildings are newer, and they appear to be well maintained.

It baffles me with this many units now in Texas, to say nothing of all the units just in Huntsville, that they still do this. You would think there are enough units to give the women units of their own.

My Wife was just moved to Goree also this weekend.
