Kentucky suspends satanic religious services by inmates at state prison
Sat Aug 31, 2:16 PM ET

LEXINGTON, Kentucky - The Kentucky Department of Corrections has suspended formal satanic worship services at a prison while officials work to shape a statewide policy on the practice.

Inmates at the Green River Correctional Complex, a medium-security prison in Central City, had been allowed to hold weekly satanic services this summer as part of the official religious services calendar, said Lisa Carnahan, a Corrections spokeswoman.

"We honestly didn't know it was on the religious calendar," Carnahan said after the Lexington Herald-Leader questioned the practice.

"We are researching it to see what we are required to allow under the law. But we've found information that indicates that satanic services could be a threat to the institutions, so for now we won't aid or abet satanic worship," she said.

Under federal law and U.S. Supreme Court ( news - web sites) decisions, correctional institutions may not prohibit the exercise of inmates' religious freedom, as long as the practice of the recognized religion does not compromise the safety of other inmates or the staff, said Joe Weedon, manager of government affairs for the American Correctional Association.

Satanic services were suspended Thursday at Green River after the newspaper's inquiry.

Inmates of at least two of the state's other 14 prisons practice Satanism on their own, Carnahan said.

Carnahan said the state has not suspended Wiccan services, which also are held at Green River and three other prisons. Wicca practices witchcraft but sees the divine in every element of nature.

"We don't have any materials that indicate that Wicca compromises the safety of the institutions," Carnahan said.

The issue arose at Green River a few months ago when one inmate sought permission to practice Satanism.

Warden Patti Webb decided it was safer to give inmates a specific time and place to worship, where they would be monitored, rather than letting them practice among themselves on the prison yard, Carnahan said.

Only two inmates showed up last week for the satanic services at Green River, Carnahan said.

Policies in other states vary. For instance, prison officials in Texas, where 150 inmates say they follow Satanism, prohibit the services.

To question and understand and judge Satanisim would be as hard to do as any other religion you don't know and understand if and such as Christianity, Judisim, Hindoism, Wiccan etc etc.
Rememeber the Twin Towers all in the name of someone's idea of Allah?

In general they could all be claimed as dangerous if you don't belong to that group. That is the danger in not allowing religious freedoom.

Satanism? What is it?
Satanism is a religion of the flesh, a religion that views humans favourably. Those practising this religion is on the path of humanity.

Satanism, as a Left Hand Path religion, encourages the practitioner to experience emotions and understand them, be they love, lust, fear or aggression.

Of course, it is a tremendous responsibility to embrace something as potentially dangerous as aggression - but the Satanist is more than willing to bear that responsibility. We are, after all, born with all these emotions, so they are not things to be ignored or suppressed.

The goal is to really understand something like aggression and give it proper direction and focus. Even love, that most wonderful emotion, can be dangerous in the emotionally crippled minds found with many adults.

Satanism feels that repressed emotions only grow stronger and uncontrollable, which is why it is better to experience them fully and through that experience master the feelings. Mastering feelings means you get them to serve you, not the other way around.

Satanism is a worldly religion, and as such the religion embraces rationality and science. Know the world you live in, and know how to pursue knowledge and wisdom. Science is one of the best ways to gather information about the real world as it uses logic and observation of the material world

Wicca is NOT Satanism
Satan is a Christian invention.

"Satanism, as a Left Hand Path religion"
True - the Right Hand Path is Christianty - left is away from God.

"...encourages the practitioner to experience emotions and understand them, be they love, lust, fear or aggression"
Thats what they claim - and if that really is what it is - then fine by me (as being a Buddhist) If this is what it really is then is Satanism a rebellion against the suppression Christianty give to our nature.

BUT how ever - many who worship Satan dont see this and think it is a worship of evil and they become evil. The ego is the center of the world - "Do as you please". We have to act against this direction.

Satanism and evil seem's to be recognized as a common denominator. And in that, it can be said, a rebellion against all organized religion other then it's self.

The word Satan as used in the Christian context, is a English translation of the orginal text. The words Adversary and the Evil one, are other words used. Meaning an, enity against or opposite in the spirit world. One can note, that in the Christian context, the name is always capitalized, giving homage to a higher spirit power.

Can Satanism be call a religion? From the writtings of Christiianity, as Satan being a higher power then humanity, it can be a Spirital enity, which concurs with the good and evil that Christianity teaches.

i know the difference between wicca and satanism, but a lot of times, the media ~ and the naive public ~ confuse the two....take one look at the west memphis three case and you'll see what i mean.....

whatever, i feel like religious freedom covers ALL religions, not just one.....i hope the satanists get their ceremonies back....
