My b/f is in a work camp here in Virginia. Every evening for the past two months when they would go out onto the yard there would be a little black girl dog waiting outside of the fence. So all of the guys have been sneaking her food and they all have gotten so attached. Some of the guys overheard the CO's say the warden was going to call the dog catcher so they got together and wrote a letter to the warden and ask if he would put a good word in for her to try and get her in the Pen Pal Program. And don't you know he did just that.
For those who don't know what Pen Pals are about this is where you can find it on the web.

[url]www.vadoc.state.va.us Then click on offenders and then click inmate programs then under educational click pen pals.

She went to Buckingham Correctional.

I just want to give Howard Arthur - Superintendent of Rustburg Correctional Unit 9 two thumbs up for commiting an act of kindness.

Awww this is so neat ... gosh I love to hear a good story!

Kudos to Mr. Howard Arthur!!!

I just went to the site and saw the pix of some graduates ... they are all so sweet looking ... too bad they don't have more programs such as this in all the states :(

Cheena I agree with you. Hopefully since Animal Planet done a special on it the other states will take a hint. It's has to be great therapy for the prisoners. And it offers an animal who's days are numbered a second chance at life. I see it as a win win situation.

well guess what? In Mansfield Ohio at MANCI they have a dog program there, where some inmates have a dog in their cell instead of another inmate. .........these inmates train these dogs and learn responsibility at the same time, and people can adopt these dogs after a certain period of time, like inmates families, or prison workers or other people ......... I've seen some of the dogs in the visiting room with the inmates..........that was when I was allowed to visit my man........... Just thought I'd share that bit of info. with ya all.

Whoa... whoa... whoa, whoa, whoa! What is THIS!?!?! INMATE DOGS? Outrageous and adorable! This brings a new meaning to the motto:

"THE Letter-dash-DOG" watches out for another dog.
