First of all, blessings to all who have a loved one on death row. I cannot in my wildest imagination think what that horror must be like for you. I can only hope and pray that this abomination called the death penalty will be abolished forever.

Which brings me to my prediction:

I predict (ahem!) that the trial and conviction of Saddam Hussein will provoke a world-wide debate about the morality and ethics of the death penalty.

Shoshona, welcome to PTO. I hope that you are correct in that prediction, I believe that the questions and doubts are arising, and pray that you are right.
As a nice person on here has told me, which I now believe, one small step at at time. :)

I PRAY YOUR PREDICTION IS RIGHT AS WELL

Well, Bush wants him dead, so I think that's going to go against him escaping a death sentence. However, I hope he doesn't get put to death. I don't care what the man did, we have no right to take anyone's life in the name of justice.

No matter how much debate there is, worldwide or not, if the US wants him dead, he will die. That's not being cynical, that's stating fact. Most of the so-called civilised countries of the world abolished the death sentence decades ago yet America still has it, and in the case Bush's home state, still uses it to kill off everyone they want.

Even those states like Illinois, where Ryan admitted the death penalty was 'broke' are still sending people to the Row and, if Lisa madigan gets her way, some of those who had their sentences commuted by Ryan will be back on the Row in the New Year. I'm sorry if I sound harsh but the love of my life is one of those Madigan is threatening to put back on the Row and it's a very worrying time for me.
