My boyfriend was is Harris County Jail. His sister called me this morning to tell me they tranferred him last night. :( I knew it was gonna happen eventually but it still makes me sad. He signed for 3-5 years. I'm just wondering how long will it take until we find out which unit he's at? Thanks

Have you searched the TDJC website. If you do, you can put his info in the find an inmate area and it should pull the information up. My son left Harris County on the 12th of Jan and I was able to view the information in the system to see where he was by the 15th. Every day at 3pm is when the system is updated. Hope this helps.

I do believe that all inmates will go through Huntsville for testing. That usually takes3 to 5 weeks, and then they will be sent to another unit.

Here is the link to TDC Inmate locator.
TDCJ Offender Information Search (http://168.51.178.33/webapp/TDCJ/index2.htm).
There will be a pop up and you simply input his information. You should be able to locate him approximately 24-48 hours after leaving county, I believe. If you can't then you can call Huntsville (I'll get the number for you if you need it).
As KK said - it could take several weeks for him to actually arrive at the unit he's assigned to. He will go through Huntsville for processing, evaluation, etc.. When I've had a need to call Huntsville they were very helpful.
Hope this helps - if you need further info feel free to ask!

Your post is confusing. You said state jail, not state prison. BIG DIFFERENCE. You also said he signed for 3-5 years. What does that mean, since Texas does not have indeterminate sentencing? He should have a set number that is his maximum.
State Jails are designed for fourth degree felonies (also called "state jail felonies"), most of those are drug-related cases. They are not supposed to mix state jail inmates with Institutional Division inmates, but because of lack of bed space, sometimes they do.
If he is going to TDCJ --- 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree felony --- he will likely first go to either Garza in Beeville or Holliday in Hunstville. Both are transfer facilities.

I said State Jail, not knowing the difference between the two. Sorry. I know he's at Holliday now. I'm not sure if they will move him though. His parole date is March 2010.

if he just got to Holliday, he may sit there for a while unless there is good reason to move him someplace else. The maximum time on a transfer facility is two years, after which he can be shipped to a different transfer facility or to diagnostics and, eventually, an ID unit.
