View Full Version : What is going on at Baldwin?
peggylee 01-13-2009, 08:07 PM I have heard that they are having a bad time at Baldwin now that they have so many new inmates from other prisons. I know there has been a riot and a stabbing and something happened again last night. I also heard that they will be getting a new warden on Thursday. Does anyone have any information on this? Thank you in advance.
peggylee 02-10-2009, 01:04 AM Even though Baldwin has a new wardon, things have not improved. I understand there have been more stabbings, and horrible, bloody fights going on. It just is not right for inmates that are trying to parole out be in there with those that don't have a chance for parole and just don't care what they do or who they hurt. The overcrowded conditions and mix of high security inmates with low security inmates seems to speak for itself. Until someone takes a look at these things, I don't see any way the conditions can improve. I have always been proud to be from Georgia until now. If my dogs were to get into a fight, I could be arrested. The state seems to be more concerned about things like that ,than about the conditions of the places they house those that break the law. I agree that inmates need to serve their time and pay for their crime. I don't agree with the fact that they have to live in these horrible conditions. My dogs are more protected by the law than the inmates. The state needs to reassess their values. They want the inmates to learn to make better choices, but how can they when they live day to day under these conditions. I only wish there was something that I could do.
hungryanvil 02-12-2009, 05:55 PM My boyfriend was transferred to this prison today from Jackson. Does anyone have anything good to say?...lol... He called his Father tonight and said it didn't seem to be that bad. It's open dormitory and that was ok with him because it gave more freedom. But, to me, that seems scary. He'll get to work which is another good thing. I will pass on the posts that are here now just so he'll have the information and know to watch his back. (He does that anyway, thankfully!)
I called down there today and talked with a women named Debbie who was as nice as could be and very helpful in answering my questions.
I guess any input about this place would be great..good, bad, or ugly.
Thanks!

capricorn1963 07-15-2009, 11:30 PM Hi i trying to get a commassary package to my son who has been there for a few months. I just heard from him tonight. It was in march when he was transfered to Baldwin. Can you help me get him somethings he needs. PLEASE I have been reading your letters to each other I really need help
Thank You And GOD BLESS
Kiddo117 07-16-2009, 10:41 PM They will not permit him to have packages sent from the outside except at Christmas. In the past they will allow Christmas packages to be sent but your son will have to send you his list with the items he is requesting. The list is very specific and very limited as to what you can send. Otherwise, he must buy things he wants and needs (extra food, postage, paper, sodas, etc) from the commissary at the prison. In order to do that he will need money in his account.
My boyfriend is at Baldwin and I have sent him a Christmas box for the last two years. It mostly consisted of nuts, cookies, writing paper, hard candy, shampoo and soap. Otherwise the only things I can send is letters, cards, and books. Books have to be ordered from Amazon or a publisher, you are not allowed to send the book yourself. Also if you are going to send a book, the book must be on his approved list of which he can obtain from his counselor. Once his book list is approved you may send him books from Amazon, a publishing company or a bookstore like Barnes and Noble. I hope this helps...it may not be the answer you were looking for but I can assure you they will not allow him to have a commissary package other than at Christmas and due to all the budget cuts this year they may cease the packages at Christmas too. I guess time will tell.
moma k 07-16-2009, 10:59 PM he can get packages from home,,but he will have to request it from his counselor,,then he will send it to you,,be sure to put the list back into the box before you mail it,,if you need anything else let me know,,,
Kiddo117 07-17-2009, 11:05 AM Are you saying they can get packages through out the year or at Christmas like I mentioned in my earlier post?
According to what my boyfriend was told it was only at Christmas, everything else had to be purchased at the commissary unless they received a care package where the business owners in the area donated items for the prison to distribute in care packages to all the inmates. I know this happened several years ago but not in recent years. If this were the case me and my boyfriends family would send him care packages so he would not have to buy from the commissary.
hungryanvil 07-17-2009, 05:11 PM Yes, he can get packages during the year. But like MomaK said, he has to request it from his couselor, the request has to be approved. He then has to mail the form to you. At that point you get what is on the list and send it back to him along with the original request form. The package cannot weigh more than 10 pounds and don't even think to try and slip some extras in there. They go through the package before he ever gets it.
One thing I did discover was that you can open packages of Socks, Boxers, and T-Shirts so that you can send him the quantity he requested. The prison knows that Walmart doesn't sell in those quantities. If he requests cd's, they have to be unopened and new. You can't send cd's that you copied yourself.
I sent a package a couple of weeks ago to my boyfriend. He needed underwear and cd's. I sent it on Monday, he got it on Wednesday and there was no issue whatsoever.
The prison does issue underwear and clothes but it's not good quality and as much as they bleach the clothes, they wear out quickly.
Tell him to talk to his couselor to get all the information he needs and to let you know. I know it took 6 months before my boyfriend could even request a package approval form. They seem to like those 6 month time frames.
Hope this helps!!

moma k 07-17-2009, 10:02 PM yep,,they can get packages from home,,my sons girlfriend LOVED to go buy his underdrawers and t shirts,,its fun for her to shop for him,,lets just hope they let us get chrismas packages this year instead of having to order out of a catalog,,,,
Mommy4Two 07-21-2009, 09:11 PM I've been thinking that same thing about Christmas packages!!! I wanna go out and buy the stuff myself! It means more that way!! Let us know when you hear something definite!!!
Kiddo117 07-22-2009, 06:11 AM I was able to buy the items on my boyfriends Christmas list last year and send the package to him. I have never ordered anything from a catalog since he has been at Baldwin. I know that is subject to change though.
Mommy4Two 07-22-2009, 11:00 AM Well, hubby was at Al Burruss for the last two Christmases and we've been able to go out and buy stuff and send it like a Christmas package, but there was some talk about the state going to a catalog system, even for Christmas packages!!!! aaaagggghhhhh.... Why is it so hard to let them have some of the finer things in life?! :D And a little bit of home while we're at it!? My husband loves to get new towels, washcloths, t-shirts because I wash them in my detergent and fabric softener and they smell soooo good!!!! He loves it!
Lordbew/us 07-22-2009, 03:34 PM it's all about control & the $$$$.
LORNA 07-30-2009, 10:47 PM Kiddo-
As long as it's approved by their counselor, our loved ones can get monthly packages. The private prisons/half-way homes and camps may be different, but monthly packages are "standard" at the Georgia State Prison S.
Kiddo117 08-01-2009, 09:36 PM Yes, I have since found out this is correct. I was just under the impression from my boyfriend and when he first arrived at Baldwin that Christmas was the only time he could receive a package. He is very conservative and hates for me or his family to go to any extra expense; therefore, he has not ever taken advantage of the other packages. We had a talk last week at visitation and I think he might be more willing to let me and his family send him some things from "home" that he can have such as his socks....again he is very conservative.
