I received this today and hope Mr. Mallon doesn't mind me passing it along... I think it's important. The poll takes just seconds to complete. Thank you. Emmy

"The American Family Association, an anti-gay organization, is doing a poll on gay marriage. They are going to present the results to Congress, hoping to gain support for the federal constitutional amendment to define "marriage" as solely a heterosexual union. However, anyone can take their
poll, so please pass this URL far and wide. (I doubt they expect anyone but their own, anti-gay members to answer it.)"

I wonder if they will still submit it to congress not that they aren't seeing the votes they wanted???

Restuls so far:

I oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and "civil unions" 35.92% (178350 votes)
I favor legalization of homosexual marriage 55.77% (276891 votes) !!!!!!
I favor a "civil union" with the full benefits of marriage except for the name 8.31% (41265 votes)

Wow!!

Thanks everyone!

I am not exactly sure who Mr. Mallon is, or whether he made those remarks quoted above. That said, I am not at all convinced that one who expresses opposition to gay marriages and/or civil unions between two homosexuals is "anti-gay," any more than one who expresses opposition to bestiality, for example, would be (should be) considered "anti-animal."

Forgive me for stating the patently obvious here: Polling, when done properly, is often a very effective gauge of national sentiment. When done improperly--and the non-poll referenced in the link above is anything but proper or scientific--one finds (non) poll results that are not at all an accurate reflection of public sentiment. Online polls, in which visitors to a particular website are encouraged to "vote," are worthless, and I suspect few would afford much credibility to the results of such surveys--even more so, as is evidenced above, when the "voters" are steered to a particular website in order to vote (push polling) and thus produce (non) poll results that tend to support a desired political objective.

There are no shortage of polls, scientifically conducted by reputable organizations such as Gallup, that show that Americans are growing more tolerant of homosexuality--a tolerance, incidentally, that seems to have grown in recent years. Indeed, I just read an online news article which quotes a recent Gallup poll that finds that while a majority of Americans are opposed to criminalizing homosexual conduct, a clear majority of Americans would support a constitutional amendment that would legally prohibit gay marriages or civil unions between homosexuals. But alas, the tide seems to be turning and, I suspect, I will, much to the consternation of the American Family Association and others, live long enough to see the day when gay marriages are afforded the same legal protections that heterosexual marriages now enjoy.
