ok I mailed my friend a letter, when he was in high desert, and later found out that he moved to salno. and I haven't heard anything, and I wrote many letters. today I got a letter, the same letter I mailed to high desert, with a new sticker saying california medical facilty, and then a yellow sticker saying not deliverable. so what now? Why would someone go to a medical facilty? and how can I find out if he is alright?

unfortunate there are many reasons for somebody to be in a medical facility: and all would make you worrying .... there is only one solution: you have to wait or to get in contact with his family members, when you call prison, they may not inform you.

I hope he will contact you soon.

but you CAN check at the inmate locator, as if this is over a week, he should be in the system with the new address, so at least you can write to him.
wish you good luck!

Just because he is in a medical facilty does not mean there is a problem. My husband was in there and is perfectly healthy. So don't worry ok. It is actually a good prison to be at from what my husband said. Don't get me wrong he didn't think it was great but from the other ones they have sent him to it was the least stressful place to be. Hope this helps!!!

Exactly!! CMF is right next door to Solano. What you need to do is find out for sure which facility he is in. The easiest would be to just call CMF and see if he is there. If not, then try calling Solano. Ask for Records at each prison and see if he is there.

~OR~

You can call the inmate locator to find out where he is. You will need his full name and DOB. 916.445.6713

Good to know that as far as prisons go, CMF is okay. I worry about my sweet friend constantly....I'm in the south and cannot make it to CA often. We correspond strictly by mail and phone.

I don't know about a lockdown. At least they are not on lockdown where my husband is. The mail. . .well that is another story. I usually write my husband everyday and lately the mail has been very slow. He writes me about 3 times a week and I get his letters pretty quickly.
Don't stress it too much, I'm sure you'll hear from him soon!!

Hi all, my boyfriend was just transferred to CMF from San Quentin last week and he is in J Building....I had a question about the mail...I sent him several letters to San Quentin days before he was sent to CMF....will that mail get returned to me??

Also does anyone know about J Buidling and if there are a lot of issues there? Thanks!!

Welcome! The mail should get transferred to CMF, but it may take some time. Technically San Quentin is supposed to forward it to the new prison, but I wouldn't expect it to happen quickly. But eventually he should get it.

As far as I can tell J2 seems to have some trouble-makers that lead to some lockdowns/cancelled visiting, but the rest of J (J1 and J3) seem fine on that front.

For the most part CMF is pretty relaxed and trouble-free as far as prisons go. I'm sure he'll find it a nice change in that sense!

Okay, so I taped the back on my envelope down b/c frankly the envelopes suck so much that they will most likely not stay down by themselves.

Now I find out that even *this* is contraband. Are you kidding me? Okay, so now that I sent *all* that off, what is going to happen? Will they just take off the tape on the back (I didn't include any anywhere else), and give it to him, or are they going to send this letter back?

There were no stickers or any other contraband, just copious amounts of tape to keep the envelope from opening.

This is such a freaking pain!

I wouldn't worry too much-I've definitely taped down envelopes going to CMF and never once had a problem. I've actually never had a single problem with mail there, including maybe a few stickers on an envelope around the holidays :), thick packets of stuff, etc. Don't panic--you should be totally fine!

If you ever have questions about the mail rules you can call and talk to them. I did this when my brother first moved there, and once again later on to talk about calendars, and they were super nice and friendly both times. The whole prison is pretty mellow.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that so this effort wasn't a complete waste.

How quickly does the mail go through over there? What is the response rate like? I'm writing from *many* states away (on the east coast), so I don't have the luxury of calling long distance (and wouldn't even if I did).

So if tape is okay, then why the hell do they say it isn't?

The mail is generally pretty quick to get in there, but clearly if you're sending it from across the country it would take longer. But once mail arrives at CMF it seems to get to the inmates very fast. I'm only about 45 minutes south of the prison, and he typically gets things I send within 48-72 hours of when I mail them. In prison world that's as fast as it gets! As for "response rate" I'm not quite sure what you mean...

By "response rate" I actually meant turn around rate, which you have answered. Thank you.

I don't even know this person, so I'm not very emotionally invested in ensuring it reached him, so I can't even imagine how family members would feel. This must be infuriating for them if they have problems with the mail room. Oh well, I just wanted to know that I didn't *completely* waste my time.

can u send those big jumbo valentines day cards to inmates ??

JMK

Not sure how big you're thinking, but I don't think you can send anything bigger than a regular piece of paper (8 1/2 X 11 inches). The only exception would be a calendar, which can be slightly larger.

If you only provide the inmate's full name and CDC# along with the prison address, will the mail still reach the prisoner? I didn't have access to the housing or bunk # as this information was not provided to me from the phone number of the inmate locater.

So will the mail still reach the inmate w/o the housing or bunk #? Just the CDC#, full name, DOB, CMF, and address?

JMK

Yes. It's common for the men to move around, so they confirm the housing info on incoming letters. If it's missing, they'll just look it up.
