INFO
I. WITNESS partner Mental Disability Rights International (MDRI) sought the
urgent intervention of the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights on
behalf of patients at the Neuro-Psychiatric Facility of Paraguay on Dec. 9,
2003 in Washington D.C. Conditions for the 460 people detained in the
facility are among the worst MDRI has documented in any country,
highlighted by the especially deplorable conditions faced by two patients,
Julio (17) and Jorge (18), who have been detained in six-by-six feet
isolation cells, naked, and without access to bathrooms for the last four
years, according to staff at the facility. Visit www.mdri.org for more
information. Press inquiries should be sent to matisse@witness.org.
II. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNTIY: Jane's Addiction has invited WITNESS to
participate in five upcoming concert dates in the United States. We need
dedicated volunteers to attend the shows and represent WITNESS. Dates and
cities are: Dec.27 Detroit, MI, Dec. 28 Fairfax, VA, Dec.31 New York City,
Jan. 2 Lowell, MA, Jan. 3 Camden, NJ. If you are interested, please write
to matisse@witness.org with "Jane's Addiction / WITNESS" in the subject
heading.
III. Burma Issues recently filmed interviews with three porters from a
group of twenty-four who escaped and fled to the Burma/ Thai border. These
porters were forced by the military to be human mine-sweepers and were held
in a prison which was recently visited by the International Committee of
the Red Cross (ICRC). Burma Issues is providing the footage and a report to
the ICRC and intends to launch a video news release around the story. Other
recent footage from Burma Issues shows forced labor for the building of
roads, especially by women and young children. The Burmese military regime
maintains that it does not practice forced labor or forced portering. Press
inquiries about footage, please write to matisse@witness.org.
IV. "Following Antigone: Forensic Anthropology and Human Rights
Investigations" the video produced by WITNESS partner Argentine Forensic
Anthropology Team (EAAF) is now available in Spanish and Arabic versions.
To order, visit www.witness.org/store.
EAAF will host several screenings of "Following Antigone" in El Mozote, El
Salvador this month for families of some victims of the 1981 El Mozote
massacre, a case that EAAF has worked on for over 10 years and is detailed
in the video.
V. WITNESS events: On December 18, 2003, Executive Director Gillian
Caldwell will speak on a panel organized by New York Film and Video Council
at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Room 607B, 116th &
Broadway, from 6-9 p.m. Seating is limited. For more information on other
WITNESS related events, please visit www.witness.org and read the NEWS

VI. Internship: The Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa
(IHRD) seeks an intern for their office in the Gambia to support the
production of a documentary to encourage ratification, understanding and
effectiveness of the proposed African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.
