Treatment Advocate Elected San Francisco's Mayor
12/11/2003
- Gavin Newsom, who supports addiction treatment on demand was elected San Francisco's new mayor, replacing Mayor Willie Brown.
- He has advocated for treatment on demand and allowing private physicians to prescribe methadone in San Francisco.
- Newsom says he favors medical marijuana and opposes the sentencing disparity between crack cocaine and other forms of the drug.
- "I think our war on drugs is an abject failure," Newsom said.
- Newsom added, "I'm part of a Boston University fellowship called Join Together, have been for six years, trying to advance the cause of sanity as it relates to this outrageous conduct of our federal government on this war on drugs. This is something that again transcends politics, this is something I've been passionate about all my life and will continue regardless of what happens with this mayors' race."
- Asked how he would deal with drug-related violence and gang activity, Newsom said, "So much of this crime, gang related crime, is so much not only just turf, but it also comes down to the pettiness in the economy, the underground economy of drugs ... We've got to invest in our kids, we've got to invest in alternatives to incarceration, we've got to give people something to be for as opposed to somebody to be against."
