Hello everyone. My husband is @ Ironwood State Prison. I just want to let everyone know that Ironwood State Prison has a very friendly staff. I have been to several prisons, and this prison is the best I have been too regarding staff. They even update their visiting status in case there is a lock down, which some prisons don't do! My son has spent time in two California prisons, Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown and Folsom State Prison.

Jamestown is very overcrowded because all the cons want to go to fire camp. The wait list takes months and months and he never was able to get to fire camp. In fact, his time in prison was extended because it took more than two months before he was given "double-time".

He also ended up in Ad Seg at Jamestown because a prison employee knew the family of his victim and he was segregated for "his own protection". His victim was his friend who was killed in a drunk driving accident caused by my son.

After about 40 days in Ad Seg he was transferred to Folsom. He is a Level I offender and the facility at Folsom has worked out very well. He is in a work camp and goes outside to work on maintence in the area. The camp is minimum security and is not overcrowded at all. He is able to make more phone calls and is much happier.

He is not behind the walls at Folsom now, but he was for a brief period and that didn't sound very good. I am only talking about the Level I facility at Folsom. Inside, the cells are tiny and there are a lot of very tough customers.

I think it would be interesting for others to write about what some of the prisons around the state are like. Soledad, California Men's Colony, etc.

I'm Glad It Was A Pleasant Experience For You Because Everytime I Travel Over 6,000 Miles From New York To California To Visit My Husband At Ironwood They Have The Biggest Attitudes And I End Up Filing Complaints About Them. The Only Person Who Is Extra Nice And Goes Out Of Her Way To Help The Inmates And Their Families Is The Family Visiting Coordinator. She Is The Best And I Appreciate All Her Help Whenever I Call And Have Questions Or Just The Way She Deals With All The Families During The Family Visiting Check-in Process. Other Than That I Have Had Very Bad Experiences At Ironwood!!! Good Luck To All Of You Who Have To Visit At Ironwood.

I didn't realize Blythe had to prisons........Charles is in Chuckawalla....how do I fly there to visit? I was told I had to fly into Sacramento then into Palm Beach but I can't find ANY flights into Palm Beach. I am coming from Florida

I go to Isp, my husband is there. You can fly into Ontario Airport and drive 2 1/2 hours more. The 10 freeway will take you there. You can check for Palm Springs but mostly along the way are small cities. Also check to see if they are airports near the Arizona and California border. It's a 1/2 from the Arizona border.

hey girl, I know you posted your message awhile back, but I still wanted to know, Did you ever get a ride out there? I have a niece who has her man up in Ironwood, he was transferred there from Tehachapi about 1 1/2 months ago. My niece also lives in L.A. and hasn't been up to see him because she has no ride. She's willing to help out with gas & even for a room which will make the trip worth it to be able to see him a couple of days, rather than just the one day. She's also been told about a bus which leaves from the Union Station. Apparently it's not a service provided by the Union Station, it's just used as a meeting place. But when we've tried to get info on this, we just don't seem to get anywhere with it. I don't know, maybe you've heard of this service. Have you? Anyways, or maybe someone out there has a solution to being able to get out there from LA.

I go to Ironwood every weekend to see my husband and everyone has been very nice to us. In the beginning I was sent back to my car once to change but now that I know the rules on what I can wear I have not had any problems since.

The Visiting Sargeant, Green is just the nicest guy in the world. He make the visiting so pleasant.

My husband is going to be transferred very soon but we are not sure where he is going and I am nervous because we are afraid the CO might not be as nice at another prison.

Yes they do ask for your license at the gate before letting you onto the grounds. I went with a cousin once who her license had expired 2 days before and they would not let her on. You could probably get a ride from the greyhound station, if you call esperanzas a week in advance.

I need help! Just last week I called to find out where one of my friends was located since it had been a while that we had communicated. So I found out but the problem was that when I called and they gave me the address. But it's been like 3 days and I haven't heard anything from him. Can someone please tell me how long does it take for letters to get to them and how long their letter takes to get to me?

hey ... ironwood is wayyy behind in inmates getting there mail from my experience... my hunnie has been getting my mail in 10 days..... but to get a letter from them is pretty fast... hope this helps!!!!!! ;)

In my personal experience, the mail there is slower then snails. The mail room is so slow that it took my husband 2 weeks to get his mail. I remember it used to only take then 3 days to get to him, but becuase of the so called *Lack of Officers* its gotten worse. Im so serious the mail there is slow. Babys can move quicker. As far as the 3 day holiday and visiting, they dont have it for labor day the last time i checked. There is 5 major Holidays they do..
1. Christmas
2. New Years Day
3. Thanks Giving
4. Forth of July
5. Independence day or is that the same thing?

I hope you get all your mail soon, becuase I would like to get mail to. I Havent gotten anything since Monday!

Labor day is a visiting holiday. They mention that on the 800# along with all the other visiting Holidays.

I hope you all have a wonderful time going to see your loved ones this weekend! I wasnt aware that they do certification mail. Best of my knowledge they didnt do that. All i know is, if its an express mail thats when they sign for it, (that takes amost 2 weeks) and that they dont read the mail. They open it infront of the inmate to make sure they dont have anything there not supposed to have.

Its usually below his name. On the first line is his name with his cdc number. Second line is his yard. Mine is in b-5.

my honey is in C yard the gym and over likes it very well.. states its pretty laid back of a yard and when I go to visit the CO's seem alright especially since they have moved this one BULLY of a CO out to yard so other than that he doesnt have much complaints about C.... they go on lockdown as often as the other yards but he pretty much likes it ...u planning on visiting soon????;)

No! it's too far and I don't know seems a little scary...I wrote to him like a week and 1/2 ago and he hasn't written back. I was also reading on other forums about how some of the guys take advantage of people they love and it got me scared. I also read about how they trade letter with other guys and have them write you back without you even knowing. I truly do love this guy like a close friend but I don't know he was really upset back in the days because I couldn't write as often as he wanted me to. Now I don't know if I did the right thing by writting to him or if it was a bad idea. I don't really know but if I don't get a response then I won't try any more. :|

Hey girl yeah you will always hear those kinda of stories... but got to go with what you know in your heart and the mail is taking about 10 days so please do not let that be any type of deciding factor because that isnt a factor.. I heard stories like those tons of times.. but U gotta just keep your eyes open and if you notice him acting different in letters sayin stuff he would never say in person then u could be suspicious ya know... and keep ur eyes open if he is askin for any type of $$$$ thats a big red flag but girl only you can tell yourself how you feel and weither or not you wanna deal with the drama of bein with an inmate we all had to make that choice by ourselves.... hey everyone!! well i got info about ironwood thanks to all of you. my man is still in observation as of the 2nd so its been 8 days!! hopefully one more week to go!! do u know if we have to fill out new visiting forms?? they said no but people say yes i dont know !! his mom wants to go see him behind glass but its not worth the 3 hr drive for that from L.A its not worth it, i rather wait for CONTACT!!! anyways i received a form he fiiled out for the quarter it came out to $130 dayamm and he said that was the cheap things lol!! anyways he circled for the 3rd qrtr which says july-sept i think he was suppose to choose for the 4th quarter starting october -dec right??? i erased it and circled 4th?? did i mess up??? i maile dit out already too?? does anyone know how long it will take to get to him?? should i have left the 3rd qrtr circled?? oops!!!! what should i wear the first time i go see him ?? LOL i havent huged or kissed him in almost 8 months !!!

To the best of my knowledge you do not have to submit a new visiting form if you already have one on file at another prison; however, if I was you, I would submit another visiting form just incase, because they have a huge tendency of losing stuff like that. (know this off my own experience) I agree with you about the drive and only seeing him for 2 hours, and I would wait to see him contact to contact, but think of it this way if you were put in her the mothers shoes and not sure if this maybe the last time you were going to see your son, what would you want to do? What vendor did you go thru? I do agree with him $130 is cheap. It may seem expensive to us, but to them its a cheap price. since you changed it for the forth quarter that means hes will not get a package before september only get it first of october. You should have left it alone for 3rd quarter bc he would have got it at the end of the month. If you went through access you can call them up and change it. Depending on the vendor you go through, and all it can be about 3 weeks. What should you wear, well its hot out there because your in the middle of no where i say wear a nice skirt with a blouse with sandals..

You can wear sandals they just have to have straps in the back. You do have to get the form from your honey!

I CAN BE OF SOME ASSISTANCE ALMA. THE RENT IS FARELY CHEAP, BUT CAN BE CHEAPER IF YOU HAVE STATE ASSISTANCE. AS FAR AS THE JOBS OVER THERE, IM GOING TO BE HONEST THEY ARE SO SCARCE THAT YOUR LUCKY IF YOU CAN FIND A JOB AT A FAST FOOD OR GAS STATION OUT THERE. CLOSEST JOBS ARE 1 AND HALF AWAY AND THAT WOULD BE COACHELLA AND INDIO. WELL, YOU KNOW HOW THE WEATHER IS OUT THERE AND YOU KNOW HOW THE WEEKENDS ARE WHEN YOU GO VISIT AND HONESTLY NOTHINGS DIFFERENT. YOU DO THE SAME EXACT THING YOU DO ON WEEKENDS THAT YOU WOULD DO M-F. I agree with Vita (good paying) jobs are scarce, however I've always been able to find a decent job. I have a low paying job right now but have an interview for another job next week--I will also be interviewing for EDD in both San Diego and San Bernadino--these are the jobs I want!! Wish me luck on either. If I get either of those jobs, I will still keep my apartment in Blythe for the weekends.:D We have family in both areas so I won't have an issue on where to stay if I get either one of the jobs. The rent here is cheap, the weather is hot, the town is small so lots of gossip and a bit of drama too. We have an Albertson's, smart and final, k-mart, a small movie theatre, oh we now have a drive thru starbucks. One high school, one continuation school, one community school, one middle school, and three elementary schools, and one community college. Sorry to say but the school system sucks and is one of the lowest ranking in the state. Thank god my girls both got scholarships--one academic (she was smarter than a lot of her teachers) and one sports (basketball). Anyway hope that helps a little.

girl have you thought about renting you apt on week-end for the girls that go up there to see there love one to make money to help you pay for your apt.let me know i would like to do that so i can see my son for the week-end. i go like 2x the mo up there but if i can stay somewhere i would go up more off. i think the rooms up there need help if you understand what im saying. hi alam got your e-mail. honey you wanted to move were the prison at cool. but i was read its hard for a job up there how about san ber co. there are alot of jobs out here and its just 2 half hr away from there.

I sure have thought about that.:D The problem is that when my daughters left they took everything with them (beds). I have two spare bedrooms, and an extra bathroom. I thought about getting a couple of bed in a bags (for immediate use) until I get a couple of twins or fulls for those rooms. I don't want anybody coming out here and being uncomfortable--like a sore back, I mean it's not like the prison visiting room chairs are sooo comfy;). I would want anybody who comes to my spot to feel at home and comfortable. I thought it would be cool because after a Saturday visit we can come back here cook up some food and kick back. It would also be kinda nice since the holidays are coming up and I know everybody wants to visit and save money too. PM me, we can discuss it more.
Alma--you might want to go to the riverside county job website and sign up for the various tests for jobs they have. They always seem to have openings in the Indio area, which is about 100 miles from here. Good luck!:thumbsup:
girl have you thought about renting you apt on week-end for the girls that go up there to see there love one to make money to help you pay for your apt.let me know i would like to do that so i can see my son for the week-end. i go like 2x the mo up there but if i can stay somewhere i would go up more off. i think the rooms up there need help if you understand what im saying. hi alam got your e-mail. honey you wanted to move were the prison at cool. but i was read its hard for a job up there how about san ber co. there are alot of jobs out here and its just 2 half hr away from there.

how ya doin girl??? I am doin okay havin some car issues but GOD is awesome is workin away at those issues so I am OK at this moment just waitin for Gods timing... I am not sure if or when Matt had surgery... I know he had his pre-op on Friday 09-09 so I hope all is well with him... I miss him so much girl =) check out the pic in my signature...!

I just interviewed for a city bus driving job--we have a very small transit system but at least we have one. It pays a couple more dollars more than my current job and I'm hopeful that I will get it--if so then that will help and tide me over until I get one of the EDD jobs. State jobs take a while to get.
You know it appears for me recently that something is in the air and is moving in a wonderful direction and I'm coooool with that :thumbsup: :dance:. Got my phone back on, internet is back on. I'm blessed.

Just wanted to say hi to all the ISP ladies--I had a great visit this weekend--although with the lockdown the visiting room was a little empty. I know a few of the guys on the yard and their families so me and my baby look forward to saying hello to eveyone (him the families--me the families and the guys). Anyway, I hope everyone has a great week with lots of mail and calls and let's pray that everyone comes off of lockdown and stays that way for a long time.

If there is any one who is looking for transportation there is a charter bus called california touch of class it's located on 58th and central in los angeles it cost 65.00 for adults and about 45-50 for children age 5-12. Ill post the number later, they only go twice a month on sundays, they will be going on the 13th of november they have four pick up stations .
