I am just curious...before I was "in " the system I heard jokes about "conjugal" visits and I am curious who is eligible..(state- federal)? How do you get one..hehehe? really I am just wondering...

There are none in the Federal System and Texas Prisons.

I am pretty sure California still allows them dependant on your situation.

AAAAAW! RATS! HAHAHA! I have been wondering bout that!

Yeah.. I sure was wondering too when I went in! LOL..
In the feds they let you take furloughs if you are at a low enough custody level and are 2 years or shorter. I thought I would have been at that custody level since I had never been to prison before but I ended up at the Medium security my entire stay (half of it by choice) and was never elligible.

In NY if you are legally married you are allowed a 2 night trailer visit every 90 days. My guy said others told him the trailers are really nice with kitchens and livingrooms etc. Some even have 2 bedrooms so if you have kids they can come too. Well since I'm not in NY no use dreamming, lol. Florida doesn't allow any! :(

Susan Martin

Ohio doesn't have any of those type of visits........ oh well, we're not married anywy so that woudn't be an option if they did.....LOL

I guess the people in the DOC are too busy losing their keys (haha--Indiana warden) to look at all the research that describes the benifits of conjugal visits, not only for thei nmate and the family of the inmate, but also for the institution and staff. NUMEROUS studies indicate that inmates are more cooperative, less aggressive, etc when conjugal visits are an option. It is common sense I think--- there are few incentives for inmates-this is a big one--helps inmate's self-esteem, mental health, families' cohesion and mental health, improves relationships with prison personnel, less tension, etc ALL states should offer conjugal visits in my opinion

Sherri... I agree completely... but I don't really care about the studies.. my reasons are purely selfish... :D

Sherri,
I agree too! I agree with the studies I mean it is a natural part of life. I also agree with JD's selfish reasons, lol

Amelia

Well. what have i started!!?? I agree with you all and I wish I still lived in NY..that would be terrific!!!!hehehe! I am mostly selfish but agree that they should pay attention to the studies....Oh well maybe someday???sure would be nice if it was someday soon..hee hee!

No congical visits in texas at all. There are none in California either. they did away with them after a man killed his wife and because they lock you in there for 2 days they did not know until they came to get them out.. SO they no long have them or the family visits. SORRY!!

Maybe it's an idea (for all of us), to just collect some figures and research results. If we have collected enough, we could send it to the prisons and to the governors. It might have no result, but if everybody keeps doing this, they'll have to read it one day and think about it? If anyone has any information somewhere stored on their computer you can send it to me, because I'm planning on starting this?
Or am I being too optimistic?

Ladies:

I quite agree with all of your views, reasoning, emotions, and selfishness. However, with the current "get tough on crime" and criminals, I do not see conjugal visitation an option.

When our conservative society views our nations 2.3 million prisoners as human, rather than just criminals, then perhaps the studies will be meaningful. Certainly, conjugal visitation, is good for the family(ies)! It is good for the child(ren) of incarcerated people.... "in this land of the free".

However, offering conjugal visits, would not gain votes for legislators or govnors. They would be seen as being soft on criminals and would not be relected, that would certainly mean they would have to get into the real world of the practice of law.... in most cases. That would mean they would have to know something and remain current with CLEs to practice. They could not have that now could they?

unfortunally i think you have a good point there:(

SORAYA-YOU ARE NOT TOO OPTIMISTIC--CHANGES ARE MADE BECAUSE OF PRESSURE FROM PEOPLE-THE MORE PEOPLE THE BETTER- I THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA. I HAVE SOME ARTICLES I WILL FORWARD TO YOU.
BARRISTER-I SEE YOUR POINT BUT I THINK A LOT IS IN HOW YOU PRSENT INFORMATION-I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON A GRANT PROPOSAL FOR A REENTRY PROGRAM THAT HELP EX-OFFENDERS FIND EMPLOYMENT-YOU ARE RIGHT THIS IS NOT A POPULAR POPULATION WITH POLITICIANS, OR THE GENERAL PUBLIC FOR THAT MATTER-BUT IF WE CAN "SELL" THE FACT THAT 2/3 OF OFFENDERS RETURN TO PRISON WITHIN 3 YEARS B/C THEY HAVE NO OPTIONS, IF WE CAN SELL THE POINT THAT THIS PUTS COMMUNITY SAFETY AT RISK AND COST TAXPAYERS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS--THAT GETS PEOPLE'S ATTENTION--SIMAILARLY, IF WE CAN DEMONSTRATE HOW CONJUGAL VISITS HAVE POSITIVE AFFECTS FOR NOT ONLY THE INMATE, BUT THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE--WE CAN GET SOME BUYERS....

Well Sherri! let's go! you got me already to win this one!! I think it can't hurt to try and make a difference...changes need to be made or more and more things will be taken away from the inmates ( and us) until it is an even worse system!!LET"S GO FOR IT!

03-27-2002, 01:01 AM
Sherry, I know that 2nd reply didn't sound optimistic, but I'm also sure we can make a change. So if we all work together on this one. I might be able to find more people to help in this. I will look up some facts also, maybe from here in Europe, because I know conjungal visits are allowed here. Maybe after a while it might put a little more pressure on them if they see this gets 'worldwide' attention?

How does one go about finding out if it is allowed or not? Everytime I ask a question when visiting my husband the answer is NO.. but then talking to other wives/family members of other inmates they tell me that they did this, or that. Hmmm I wonder?

GaPeach, is what they did "legal" per se? I know a number of guys in the feds that claim to have gotten special visits thanks to "special" guards.. It is a once in a blue moon deal though.. and a few are probably just a "pipe dream".. :)

That sure would be nice.....David, can you tell me more about the furloughs? How do you go about getting them? Since I will most likely be going to a camp what are my chances, how long do I have to wait before I try to get one? It sure would be nice to be able to see my daughter once I am gone.....I'm thinking I should more this to a different forum.....well, this will just be a test on if you read everything LOL

There are no conugal visits for female inmates in Kentucky...even if you are married. Males can have them. Same in Kansas. Unfair?

probably because it is easier for women to sneak stuff back in then it is for men.. Who knows maybe they like seeing men more then women. that would not suprise me a bit. Sick a__ guards.

Refusing these visits for female inmates might have something to do with the prison not want to have pregnant women in there?

I wish they did do conjugal visits I would have been married a long time ago!! I think they should have them everywhere but I guess they don't care about the well-being for the inmate and their wives/husbands. Good post though.

At our last visit Stephen mentioned at the end that in the Texas State JAIL system the guys can get furloughs...???...anybody know if this is true or just some misinformation that he recieved?? I am so curious and wont be able to ask him until next week unless I get a letter from him before then! Aaaaah!

Hey guys I think this is definitely worth fighting for! Just to throw a couple more points out there...the state should NOT be able to take a person's God given right to procreate! Reproduction is NOT something that the government has ALLOWED us to do...it is something God MEANT for us to do. Our country is based on Christian ideals...and most of these conservative republicans are members of the Christian Coalition. Make them answer those kind of questions!! Another point...wouldn't allowing conjugal visits cut down on the sexual assaults that occur inside!? We would have to find a better way to sell this one since they really don't care what happens to our loved ones on the inside!! I'll get off my soap box now!! :D

kali
05-07-2002, 02:00 PM
who can remember back in the day when they used to sterize prisoners so that they would not procreate?! They thought that being a criminal was in your genes....so I suppose we have come a long way, we just have a bit father to go/

Monty, I agree 100%. I wonder if it will ever happen. They probably would think that inmates will try to get married any way possible.

Kaly, I'm glad they don't do that anymore. It's not in the genes it's how the parents raise them and the way they live. The government is so discriminating.

In the bay Area of California near SF, where I live, specifically San Quentin State Prison where Cliff resides for the next month and a half or so, ther is conjugal visits. He has to be mainline, not in reception. He has to be married to the person visiting and the children can not be under 7 years old. Don't know why. The person visiting must be an approved visitor. The prisoner must have enough money on his books to buy all of the food, etc being used, the visitor can not bring any food. You get to spen 40 hours with your honey in one of their cottages on the property. It has a kitchenette and a tiny living room, bedroom, bathroom with a shower. This is all what I hear, since I am way too scared to take advantage of a conjugal. I don't know if I would bring the kids there, I'll see after Saturday.

>>>the visitor can not bring any food<<<

Either it's there (Q's) rule or things have change in California. At DVI (Tracy CA) I brought the food when Hosa's wife came from WI and she took it in. He would send me a LIST of what he wanted. He would have accounting send me a check to cover the cost from his account.

They don't have conjugal visits in Michigan either. You can't do anything. We were hollared at cause I touched his face! You can't touch each other during the visits, only to hold hands. You can hug and kiss once at the beginning and at the end of each visit. Well that was at the other prison; after that he went to a really bad place and we had to visit looking at each other through the glass and talking on the phone. And it was always freezing cold in there! Now we've lost our visits altogether for doing basically nothing. But I will definitely fight in every way I can to get them back.

My friend who was going to school for Cr. Justice, just happened to have an extra book and gave it to me. (knowing my situation) well according to this book. there are 6 states in the US in 1998 that allow conjugal or family visits. They are CALIFORNIA, CONNECTICUT, MISSISSIPPI, NEW MEXICO, NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON. im not sure about 2002

Check this out:

I was told that in the prisons in Belgium you can have these private hours in a trailer on the prison yard. but you have to been together before you went to prison. so let's say you're in prison and meet a woman you marry, you will NOT get the conjugal visit...
