If this is a repeat I'm sorry. My Name is Rebekah and I am from Bham Alabama. My daughter is being shipped out (i just found out about 2 secs. ago) either tonite or 3am in the morn. She will be leaving the Shelby co. Jail in colunbiana, Al to go to Tutwiler. Is there anything I can take to the jail for her to take with her? She called a family member and said she could take what she could wear. She would have to put on 6 pair of white panties, socks t-shirts hair ribbons..white shoes. I called the jail and they said I couldn't take anything Can someone please tell me which is it. Can I or Can't I. In a hurry Rebekah:confused:

Unfortunately, the only things she can take with her are legal papers and a Bible.

Let me foirst Weilcome you to PTO and the Alabama Forums. Right now I know you are confused ans scared for your daughter. Each prison has an evaluation process they do for each new inmate. This is to decide what level of security she is and what programs she can take or is court ordered as to what dorm they will put her in.
As to clothes I am not sure what the rules are anymore but I did find the address for the facility which you will need for the future in order to write her and a phone number for you to call and ask about clothing issues. I do know She will have to fill out a contact list for phone calls and visits, and money on the books ( which has to be Postal Money Orders) and she will need your personal info for that. The calls are collect and depending on your phone system you may have to prepay a company before you can recieve any. I was lucky and my company allowed them and the 15 call limit was only 6.95 each time..but these can add up quickly. I have heard horror stories from other AL members of $15-20 calls and cuttoffs in the middle of the call, but these where from the male prisons as we only have a few Alabama girls in that are on the website.

Just ask the person who answers the phone your question about sending clothes to your daughter. Sometimes they let first offenders a box but only within a certain timeframe. If she has been assigned an AIS# you'll need that when you call otherwise besure you have her SS# and date of Birth handy.

I have also started a thread(a few year old now) in the Parents who Have Children in Prison Forum, titled "Moms with Daughters in Prison". You are more than welcome there anytime as you will find lots of personal support and friendship from other Mom's who have walked in your shoes. PTO is the strength that all of us need and without it I would never have be able to continue this journey.
