Has anyone heard from a inmate in Beaumont Low, yet? I guess the phones are off. I called the hotline and was told the prisons in Beaumont are on generators but that there was no water inside the units. But i'm going to worry until i hear from my brother so if anyone has any news please post it. thanks

do you seriously believe they would tell you if there was water in the units? there's enough public information on the tv and internet to tell you they are flooded. do you think they would tell you if the inmates toilets were backing up and spilling over unto the floors? oh, they will tell you sani-johns are in place in the court yards for their use, but that dos'ent mean anyone will be able to use them. i know from past experience when rita went through that area, and ike is a tad worse than rita. pam

it really peves me when there is a lack of information regarding the inmates in hurricane affected areas. these peoples safety or rights are never discussed on tv, radio, or in the papers. only weeks after the fact do we find out the truth about what happened to them during these disasters. and it only comes from the inmates themselves. the guards are apparently told not to discuss the issues with family members of the inmates. i had a couple guards come close to telling me stories, but they clammed up, and shook their heads in a negative way after rita came through. something should be done to improve this situation. are the stories of their conditions and sufferings in their cells off limits to the news media? we are also suffering out here with worry and heartache for them. lets do something about this.

To say the least, I have been thinking about this for the last 24 hrs. They seem to be more worried about the pets being evacuated.... Please!!!! DO NOT get me wrong I have lots of animals & they are as much a part of our family as our kids. But you give me a choice in grave circumstances, I chose my kids. These are human beings we are talking about!!!!! I am beside myself. Give me a suggestion Pam, I am all ears!!!!!!

I haven't heard from my nephew yet but I know he will call as soon as he can. He last called home Friday, the 12th and was still at the compound, no evacuation. He informed us that if there would be some flooding, inmates would be moved upstairs and confined for safety issues at the compound. As soon as I hear from him, I will post the update. Don't know if they have power or not. Hopefully, we will hear something soon.

bewilderedmom...i just read some of melissatx posts, and she has some valuable information. link on to some of the nowpublic news reports that she gives. very informative. she also mentions texas civil rights, and that includes our people in the jails and prisons. we need to call or write and express our concerns regarding the situation our family members are in. i pray they are ok and keep their wits about them. but we can't sit by silently and accept what is'nt right either. :(

I just want everyone to know that I talked to my son yesterday at Beaumont medium. They are up an running already. They didn't have major flooding except for leaking waters in the cells. They are on generators and water has returned. Toilets are working. Beaumont low and the Camp never lost water. I thanked God my son was able to call me, I was worried sick and thought I wouldn't hear from him in weeks.

God Bless everyone!

I spoke with my nephew last night and he said they are running with generators. Initially they did not have enough generators to power the A/C but more were brought in so they are doing okay now. They did not have any flooding or sewerage problems. They couldn't bathe for a few days due to running water issues but are able to now. The running water isn't the greatest and they are told not to drink it. They are giving them bottled water. The situation that Pam (Numberoneson) described is not happening at Beaumont Low. I do not know the situation at the state prison. Hope this helps.

What is Beaumont Low & Medium? Is it a city jail or state jail or prison? Where in Beaumont are they located? Are they close to Gist unit on hwy 69?

Bewilderedmom:

It's a compound between Beaumont and Port Arthur with three different Federal facilities, each with different security level (low, medium and the camp) It is in road 3415 that runs pararell to 69. I am not sure where in relation to the compound Gist is.

That has got to be real close to Gist. You turn off of HWY 69 onto FM3514. So then they are also in the Nederlands. If those units are doing ok then I feel Gist should be also.

Bewilderedmom, I mapped it on map quest and Beaumont Federal Correctional Center (FCC) which includes a low, high, and usp unit, is approximately 3.9 miles from the Gist unit. They probably didn't get any flooding either since Gist is a little north of Beaumont FCC.

Thank you for taking the time to look that up for me! Forgive my lack of knowledge on the prison systems, I am learning. My son is a 5 hr drive away from us, one way. I go to see him only once a month due to the fuel cost & the long drive, that takes approx. 14-15 hrs. round trip. After stopping for fuel, eating & the visit it is a long day. I would often complain, wishing he was closer. But after realizing that both of you (as well as alot of others) are from out of state.....Wow! It now makes me feel blessed. No more complaining on this subject from me. That has got to be hard for all the families that have loved ones so far from home. I have alot to learn! I am so thankful for this website.

The entire prison area (Gist, LeBlanc, Stiles, Jefferson County Correctional, Texas Youth Commission, the Fed Prisons, every unit) is actually south of Beaumont. The flood plain actually goes all the way up to IH-10. The hurricane was bad, but it wasnt terrible like RITA in 2005, went through 3 so far. The units werent evacuated because there was no place to put them, the south TX units were evacuated too soon by order of the Govenor, so there wasnt time to evacuate all the prisons. You wouldnt believe what its like evacuating, hours spent on the road and not moving. Better for them to just go through the hurricane than the horrible evacuations. I'm sure conditions werent pleasant for them afterwards, but it wasnt hot at all afterwards, actually really nice after IKE.
