Has anyone heard any news from out of the Beaumont area? My son is in the Larry Gist unit. I called yesterday afternoon to the Gist unit & they said they were not going to evacuate this time. I have called the 24 hr hotline both today & yesterday and only received a busy signal. I have been up most of the night listening to our local news that has a sister news station in Houston and have listened to CNN & FOX national. They have been reporting on IKE solid for the past 52-54 hrs. I have not seen much news out of the Beaumont-Port Arthur area (east-side of IKE). I have came to the assumption that they can't get into this area yet! I hope & pray that everyone in this area is OK!!! I am hoping that someone closer to that area may have heard some local news. If they indeed even have electricity or communitations.
Thank You & God Bless!

I don't know anything about the prisons in the Beaumont area, but The Weather Channel was reporting from Beaumont off and on all night. Jorma started out in Port Arthur and had to move up to Beaumont because of the storm surges. I can tell you that Beaumont was pounded with 60+ MPH winds for 10 straight hours through the night. I think the entire area is without power - lots and lots of power lines and trees down and lots of flooding.
I can imagine how you must be feeling - my husband spent time at Gist and I know I'd be crazy after watching this monster all night. I hope you hear something soon! In the meantime, prayers going up for all in those prisons.

Thanks for the Information!
The Larry Gist unit, LaBlanc Unit, Stiles Unit, A Juvenile Unit & I believe a Federal Unit are all on the same Farm to Market Rd (TX FM road) approx. 12-14 mile north of Port Arthur. They lay just south of Beaumont, between Beaumont & Port Arther. I am not for sure if I have all the units exact I just know when I go to see my son I pass several on the way & their are more visible farther down the road.
Thank you for your prayers & kind words!!!

bridge city, just a couple of miles north and east of nederland is under 3-4 ft. of water. the surge seems to be a little higher than when rita hit. with rita, the standing water on the first floor was 3 ft. and the men lay locked in their cells for days with no food or water and toilets flowing over with sewage. my son said the hurricane was'nt so bad, it was the days afterwards that would be unimaginable to most people. they suffered quite a bit. there were sanni-johns finally placed in the court yards, but they were only to look at, because there were not enough guards there to take them out to use those facilities. the guards are mostly women, and they have families of their own. so you know their first priority was for the safety of their children. at the stiles unit, i've learned that they have not been to the store in a couple of weeks. so they don't have any supplies of their own, such as juice, water, soups, or snacks that would tide them over until help can get to them. i don't want to worry you any more than you already are, but if people don't know the extreme conditions these people are going through, then nothing will be done to prevent this in the future. i have warned my son for the last 2 months that this is hurrican season, and please be prepared for it by storing bleach, water, snacks, anything that would ease the misery. i have written to the beaumont enterprise in the past commenting on these poor people in prisons and nursing homes who are dependent on others for their safety. someone told me to write human rights, or the gray panthers in austin. and that is my next recourse. prison inmates are the last ones people worry about, unless it happens to be their own family member. my prayers are with you and yours. pam

Thank you for the info. The Gist unit has not been to the store for the last month as of last weekend. My son said their was not a single soup between them. They have had their share of promblems at Gist 1st the fighting and lock down, next evacuated for Gustuv and they just opened visitaion last weekend & now this. I hope they were able to go to commissary this last week!! The conditions can not be healthy!!!!!!!

yes, i know they have'nt been to commissary at the stiles either. so i am going to call and write a complaint about the abscence of commissary privileges. this affects their right to communicate with loved ones. if we sit idly by and do nothing, then nothing will be done. please let everyone else know that they need to register a complaint, even if its a phone call to the warden. pam
