Prisons on coast evacuate thousands of inmates
Thousands of Texas prison inmates were evacuated today from penitentiaries in coastal counties that might be endangered by Hurricane Ike, prison spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said.
In Brazoria County, 1,068 inmates at the Clemens Unit and 1,561 at the Terrell Unit were put on buses bound for prisons near Huntsville and Palestine.
Inmates at another Brazoria County prison, the Stringfellow Unit, will shelter in place because the facility was deemed outside the area likely to be affected by Ike's storm surge, Lyons said.
In Galveston County, 402 inmates from the Carol S. Young Medical Facility in Dickinson were evacuated to prisons near Gatesville. Lyons said 129 of the prisoners had been receiving medical care at the unit.
Earlier this week, 12 dialysis patients were evacuated from the Dickinson prison.
Lyons said weekend visits to prisoners in units likely to be affected by the hurricane have been canceled. A list of those units will be released later.
Meanwhile, a 24-hour information line for inmates' relatives - 936-437-6127 - has been put in service, Lyons said.
