View Full Version : Will they evacuate? Hurricane Ike question

I was wondering if they will evacuate the state jails that are in and around Houston should "Ike" actually come in around the Galveston/Houston area.

Our sons birthmother is currently incarcerated, yet again, down in Dayton. We were just curious as to what they do in a hurricane situation.

Thank you

It is possible, depending on the exact track of the storm. Check the TDCJ website frequently for updates.

The typically move them if the unit they are in cannot sustain hurricane force winds. There is no way to tell when or if they will though. When the last one came close they posted the information on the TDCJ website so make sure to check that as well.

Before Gustav came ashore, the units at Beaumont were evacuated including state jail, so I would think so.

In my quest to find answers regarding my husband's situation, I call and spoke to the head of classifications this morning. He told me that all chain activity had been canceled today because they were moving the busses into the southern region to prepare for evacuation. (Corpus and Galveston area) I asked if Beaumont was going to be evacuated and he said that they were not planning on it at this time because of the path of the hurricane didn't look like it would swing up that way.

I generally report on these issues and others on my blog. Ike has shifted, significantly, since last night and now is headed more toward Brownsville than Houston.

It has gone east again, now most models show it hitting Corpus or between Corpus and Houston. Here is the most reliable tracking map I have found http://www.stormpulse.com/fullscreen/current It gives you many options as well. I use this for every storm. I was told today to pack my bag, I could be getting a call to respond as early as tomorrow night. I just got back from the last one on Thursday. Oh well, it is overtime.

I'm sorry. I just realized your question was about TDCJ and not really about Stormpulse or the track of the storm. Here ya go:

FROM DRUE MYERS JOURNAL
The state prison system moved 12 female dialysis patients from the Carole S. Young Medical Facility Complex in Dickinson to the Estelle Unit in Huntsville. The system also is staging nearly 60 inmate transport buses in the Beeville area should the evacuation of South Texas facilities become necessary.

I dig around for this stuff so you don't have to. Please feel free to check my blog or PM me anytime for information.

I can tell you that Plane State Jail has been evacuated befor. As of yesterday all of TDCJ focus has been on the south end of the state. Now judging from the current path and predicted forecast models I am sure we will see more efforts take place in the area between Corpus and Beaumont. I would assume Dayton would be apart of this.

Great..., I have plans to fly down to see my wife in Marlin this weekend. A flight from Canada to Texas isn't something you just "Throw together" at the last minute type thing.

Seeing as Hobby Unit is located in Marlin and the current path of Hurricane Ike is heading pretty much directly towards the area, will visiting be suspended?

I read the following on the TDCJ website:

The following TDCJ units have been evacuated:

Glossbrenner in San Diego, TX
Stevenson in Cuero, TX
