Montana meth ads winning drug battle

The successful adverts have employed shock tactics to stop meth abuse

By Jonathan Beale
BBC News, Montana

They call Montana "Big Sky Country" or "The Last Best Place" - and it is easy to see why with its wide open spaces, majestic mountains and meandering rivers.

But there is a far less wholesome side to this wilderness, a problem more associated with grim urban despair - drugs.

It all looks great on paper, but I live here and have not seen much progress- Just as many possession pops, no reduction in petty theft attributed to meth, a surge in meth-connected violence and child abuse/neglect with meth involved.... things have not gotten better here so much as simply gotten worse elsewhere.

Most of the teens and young adults at whom this campaign is aimed think the ads are kind of a joke.

The only real benefit is that the campaign HAS opened up the door for parents, teachers and health care providers to discuss the issue with young people.

Yes, I'm in Montana as well and I agree but I do believe that it opens some doors of communication as well as you're driving and see all the nasty billboards.
