ok here i go again, asking for what most people probably think is really obvious, but if i don't ask i don't know. anyway my young friend was sent to the only maximum security prison in all of oregon, which was a real shock to me, but he told me he was sent there out of intake because he has a mental health hold on him. so could folks kind of give the low down on mental health holds. like how long do they typically take, what is the ultimate purpose, what kind of things would be the result of such a hold etc. etc. i really don't suspect much will come of it at all, since the prison system doesn't seem to care one way or another how people are doing, as long as they continue to warehouse them. but i would appreciate everyones thoughts and comments on this so i can understand more about the system, how it works and what to expect. thanks!

Perhaps if you contacted NAMI (national alliance for the mentally ill) they may be able to give some answers.I hope this helps , I can't think of any thing else except calling the prison for info.I have heard of holds like this in Calif. if person is in danger of hurting self or others or has been diagosed with a mental illness who is on or needs to be on medication. Wish I knew more Tiamotzz, take care.

I work for Mental Health and I work in the facility where we do holds. There has to have been some PCI (pre committment investigation) done to truly deem someone as mentally ill. if they are a danger to themselves or others is one way to do it but one of those two have to be present to place the hold. Alot of them go to the mental health part of the prison or to the Oregon State Hospital in their prison unit for the mentally ill. You can hit me up privately if you want more info. I've been with mental health for 6 years.[
