i recieved a letter from tim yesterday and there was a stamp on the outside saying the contents had not been evaluated and what not which i took to me they dont read outgoing mail? So i was wondering if they read the letters going in? And if they do will they not let him have them if they feel they are inapproprite? I have been very careful in the letters i have sent so far but i was wondering. Thanks!

From what I understand they basically check the incoming mail for money orders, stamps, and contra-band, at least I've been told that anyway. I know I keep things as kosher as I possibly can. I guess I have a paranoid sense and don't want to give out many details on things because I don't know for sure. You have to be creative on some things!!!!!

They don't really read them and if they do I wouldn't worry about it. They pretty much check them for contraband or look for enclosures like stamps or money orders, and that's that. It probably varies how much from facility to facility. Some have gotten picky about stuff printed off the Internet, but others don't care about that.

But they could care less what you write in the letters, ladies, so write whatever you want. In eight and a half years he's never NOT gotten a letter or it be censored for any reason.

My opinion is that the only mail that ADOC *may* look at more closely is those on Death Row or some of the more serious offenders at the maximum security facilities (Bibb is medium). Simply put as far as everyone else is concerned, there is just too much mail that comes thru for them to care about what people are writing. They look for contraband or photos that aren't allowed (explicit sexually, gang signs or alcohol/drug use) and other than that they just don't care. So feel free.

One of the guys from the dorm my husband was in when he first got there back in March was called to the shift office and told his letter from home was sent back due to what was written in the letter. It was "sexually explicit" so...yes, they read them. He was told to let his wife know they would not allow those type letters as a warning. I haven't tried to send anything spicy. I believe if I have to wait...so does he! ;)

Some of my son's mail has been sent back also but I sent him some internet jokes and some scantily dressed pinups from a website that was pretty cool. The warden called him in the office and wanted to know who I was and he said my Mom and he laughed and kind of freaked but said some of the pinups could be used as tatoo material but he really liked the jokes but said he would have to send them back to me but told him your Mom's a pretty cool Mom and that was the end of that it was funny but at least he was cool about himself. We all got a good laugh about it.

Interesting, in eight years that's the first time I've heard of that happening in Alabama. Somebody at Bibb's obviously got way too much time on their hands.

Well, in that case, I guess I'd be careful if you have a loved one at Bibb. I wouldn't worry about it too much at other facilities.
