Hello everyone

Does anyone know much about fabrics??... I'm trying to make a dress, and the pattern I got suggests using "Chiffon, Georgette, Batiste, Voile and border prints" But I was wondering if I could you satin or silk??....

Does anyone know what those materials are (All I've heard of before is Chiffon! lol) and if I'd be okay to use something different?

The pattern I've got is http://www.butterick.com/item/B4977.htm (http://www.butterick.com/item/B4977.htm) (Butterick patter B4977) dress 'A' (The shorter one!)

Any help would be appriciated!

THANKS! :)
xoxo

All are very light-weight and sew true. Satin might be a little heavy, and it can be rather tricky to sew. Silk, if it's a light-weight, would probably be fine.

Chiffon and Georgette are like nimuay said lightweight fabrics. These fabrics are also see through so I would think they would be used as a top layer over a satin or silk material. There are different types of satins and silks though. Usually when the pattern recommends certain types of fabrics because it might not come out like you see on the picture. Some fabrics have more give than others. Some silks are light weight but are easy to spot if you spill something on it even a drop of water. Check out some fabric stores in your area to see what kinds of satin and silks they have and take your pattern with you to the store and they might be able to help you out with selecting some material and you might find other fabrics that will be better.

Also you can ask them to show you pieces of chiffon, georgette and other fabrics some you can become accustom to the different kinds of materials.
