Mike has been approved for dental work at a private dentist. His wisdom teeth are impacted and they are going pull them. Has anyone had experience with this? for those of you that your loved ones have contact with him please ask them to keep us updated as to when they take him for this procedure as they will not tell me for security reasons. and he won't even know till they call him for his ride. Once it happens he will be out of it for a couple of days I am sure. I won't have a clue as to what is going on till its over and days of no contact.

Hi Leeann - of course I do not have a clue about the procedures at Morgantown, but I will do my best to have my son let me know if he finds out anything. All I can say is that Mike will feel so much better after he has the teeth out - best wishes to all!

Tell him to buy some pain medication (ibuprofen I guess) in case they don't give him enough. In the past, inmates were only given pain meds for about a day. Not trying to worry you but, would be good for him to buy what he can.

Chance had his out since he has been in Morgantown...he called me right after he got back, of course I couldnt understand a thing he said but I was glad he did call so that I wouldn't worry when I didn't hear from him...I am glad they do take them spmewhere else because lord knows if the BOP hired dentists they would be just like the rest of the staff

Saints,
Do you know how long it took from when they approved till he had the appointment?

I think it was a while, maybe like a month.

That is great that they are taking him to an outside dentist. My husband has gum disease and needed a cleaning (he usually has them every 3 months). So he made an appointment with the BOP dentist. The guy about killed him....he said it will be the last cleaning he has on the inside. I hope your guy gets some relief soon!

Hello,
My boyfriend needs some dental work as well. I was wondering how long it took for the approval. He has lost 3 teeth since he has been there and now has another bad tooth...

Mike has been there since 4/8. His teeth have flared up three times since he has been there. It took three requests before it got approved. Who knows what the determinig factors are in who gets approved and who doesn't. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't put them in a hat, like a lottery, LOL. I wonder if his diet doesn't have something to do with this, as he has had two problems in 8 years with his teeth and now three in 4 months. I am sure his immune system is low. I will be glad when this nightmare is over.

a lil off subject but I think their diet has a lot to do with many of their medical issues...Chance has never had any health issues and same with dental one issue in the 5 years we've been together. He has been to many different jails in the last year and a half and has had so many issues. Now at 33 yrs old he has high blood pressure and before he was very athletic and had absolutely no problems with is health. Not to mention how they could have killed him giving him 2 medications that you can not mix.

If you were there wouldn't you have high blood pressure? I remember once in basic training I went to give blood and the red cross volunteer who was about 80 sent me to sick call for H.B.P. When I got there the doctor said if he was going to let them old ladies take his blood his bp it would be high too. Same thing everyone there should have H.B.P. considering the conditions, enviroment, and stress.

While I was visiting my son, I did ask about the dentists. He told me that although the federal government is required to provide dental services, they have no dentist available on the premises and do not consider dental work a "medical issue" (!) It seems they contract out for the dentist they do have and take the lowest bidder, who could be anyone. Another thing he told me was that even though they make it seem like such a security issue as far as notifying the families when one of the inmates is going for dental work, in fact the inmates that need dental work go into town with another inmate driving them there. I think it's time for the prison system to come into compliance and realize that dental health is as important as any other medical issue. Apparently they have the money to work on a manmade lake for the employees (another thing I found out about), but not enough to provide basic services to the people who in essence are providing them with their jobs.
