View Full Version : The Question Thread for Newbies to Corcoran
DoubleDutchldy 07-07-2008, 06:09 PM My husband was place into the ASU last thrusday, I haven't recieved any letters nor collect calls. I contacted his counselor and she was no help at all.
How can I ensure he is getting my letters?
Can I send him photos while in the ASU?
Junior'sQueen 07-08-2008, 12:39 AM Yes, you can write him while he is in ASU or SHU. You can't be guaranteed he gets your letters. Does your man have any writing supplies you are aware of? Stamps? Paper? Envelopes? Lately I know my man has been getting my letter within a two week period. It sucks, and he is in General Population. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
Level IV - General Population
Facilities III-A and III-B are Level IV General Population placements which house inmates with a classification score of 52 and above. The design of the individual housing unit is a 270º design facility.
The III-A Facility has five buildings with a total combined bed capacity of 1,000. the Level IV Administrative Segregation Unit (ASU) was relocated to Facility 3A03. Current programs in this facility include ASU, Chronic Infectious Disease (CID) Unit, and Correctional Clinical Case Management Services (CCCMS).
Conduct may result in the loss of privileges including, but not limited to, any or all of the following, for up to a 90 day period:
(1) Canteen
(2) Appliances
(3) Vendor packages
(4) Telephone privileges
(5) Personal property
Facility 4A and 4B Security Housing Units
Housing in Facilities 4A and 4B is maximum security of 180º design facility and provides for a variety of special housing programs. The majority of inmate population in these facilities is the Security Housing Unit (SHU) inmates.
Inmates whose conduct endangers the safety of others or the security of the institution are housed in SHU. In most cases, these inmates have committed serious rules violations while housed in a general population institution.
Sam'sSis 07-10-2008, 01:20 PM Hi everyone!
My brother was transferred to CSP yesterday and he is Level 2.
Does anyone have any information about this level? Is there anything in particular that I need to know?
We were approved to visit him when he was in San Quentin. Will we need to go thru the approval process again?
Thanks in advance.
aliferzwife 07-10-2008, 02:13 PM Welcome!
Visiting approvals are good for 24 months and follow the inmate. So, you should be fine if you had been approved at SQ within the past 24 months.
To be safe, you should call the visiting dept and check prior to your first visit.
edsbaby 07-10-2008, 02:58 PM Hello!! I'm a newbie to Corcoran!!!! I have lots of questions!!
My husband is going to be transferred, I'm guessing by next week. I have lots of questions... He's level 1 may be oding SAP, not sure yet. Are there jobs for inmates? Are there a lot of lockdowns?? Do they have Friday visits? Are there a lot of visitors, if so, do they terminate visits? I'm sure I will have lots more when I can remember them!!! LOL!
Thanks for all your help!!!
bills_angelbaby 07-10-2008, 03:36 PM hi edsbaby!
my husband is on the level 1 yard so i can answer most of your questions. there are jobs available. my husband works at the dairy and in the pia warehouse as a mechanics helper. of course the pay is awful, but they do give lots of overtime and double shifts. as for lockdowns, since my husband transferred from wasco about 6 weeks ago, there have been a few lockdowns, but none on the level 1 yard. well, there was, but it didn't affect visiting. they do have visiting on fridays from 12:30 to 7 and that is the best time to go. there are less people and usually not very long of a wait to be processed and transported in the van. if you have any more questions let me know.
Beth6366 07-10-2008, 04:34 PM Does anyone have some current info on what C Yard is like at CSP 1? Is it mellow? How is visiting? Do they terminate visits due to overcrowding? Are the staff cool? Doing some research for my friend on CSATF or Corcoran to see which place he might like better.
Thanks.

My husband likes C yard. He said it's relaxed for the most part. There are job and vocations for people who want them.
Visiting kinda stinks, because it's so crowded. It's usually ok on Fridays, but Saturday and Sundays are crowded, and you'll probably only get an hour visit.
The visiting staff can be cool when they want to. They can also be crabby pants. It just depends on what kind of mood they're in.
My husband has heard that SATF is ok, but I think that prison is on lockdown a lot. That's just my perception, so you might want to check with the SATF forum.
Beth6366 07-11-2008, 02:41 AM Thanks poodlegirl!

A new form has to be filled out every two years?
I did not know that..... mine might be close to two years old.
aliferzwife 07-12-2008, 11:39 AM You can just call visiting and ask how often (if at all) Corcoran expects the renewals. Some prisons only require updates if any info has changed; such as address, criminal charges, changes to parole or probation, etc.
I believe the Title 15 dropped the section limiting all applications to 24 months (last update to Title 15 was back in 9-2007), but you might want to check by calling or even just asking the next time you visit.

Weaver: My man is at Corcoran, and when his transfer from Soledad to Corcoran took place, a couple or so months into Corcoran, they just handed me another form to fill out right there, and they still let you in. It is real easy. They won't decline you. Staff at processing in Corcoran are pretty cool and easy going.
Hope this helps!

Hi There Sam'sSis! And Welcome!
Yes, my man is a level 2 on a level 3 yard, in a gym. Yep!!! Do you know if your brother was placed in the Gym Dorm? If so, its not bad. Just different from a cell, that's for sure. My man had always been in a cell and going to an open dorm was a trip in the beginning. But it is all good now.
If you have any particular questions you need or want to know, why don't you send me a private message ANYTIME!!
Take care and best of luck to you!
A.C. Aldag 07-12-2008, 04:48 PM Hi everyone, I don't have any specific answers to questions, but I just wanted to say welcome to all the new Corcoran Ladies. :)
edsbaby 07-13-2008, 02:17 AM I got another question!!!!!! :D When they first get transferred do they go through orientation?? My hubby is level 1. I always hear about orientation, but it has never effected our visiting. I'm just wanting to know so I can visit him ASAP when he gets there!! I'm looking forward to a Friday visit!!!
OneManWoman 07-13-2008, 02:59 AM I haven't seen my husband in a bit and the last time I was there, I had an interesting conversation with a CO. He told me since there was no "specific" guidelines in the Title 15 about sleeveless garments, they had to abide by them. Meaning if it's not a wife beater or spagetti strapped, it can be worn. As long as the shoulder strap was at least 3" wide, it was acceptable. Can anyone verify this for me? I'm coming up this following weekend and don't want to have to change. Also, what's the latest THIS week for heels, straps, thongs, (lake shoes they call them, that always makes me laugh!) etc.?
Thanks!

Well, I've heard the same thing about the sleeveless shirts, but I never take the chance. But if you do, don't forget to bring another shirt/blouse just in case they change their mind. I honestly don't remember seeing women going sleeveless, but someone did tell me they are allowing it.
As for the shoes, you can wear flip flops, as long as they are not the plain black rubberie ones (the COs call them "shower shoes" for the guys) But if you do wear flip flops, they can be the rubberie ones, just not plain black. (maybe these are the lake shoes you mentioned?) You can also wear strapless sandals now, etc. I do wear black flip flops, but they are wedge type and have a little decoration on the top. Heels are fine too. But you know, Corcoran gets so HOT I try to dress light & comfortable.
After all of these years I've been doing this, I still to this day bring extra clothes just in case, and shoes for that matter.
Hope this helps!
edsbaby 07-13-2008, 12:48 PM Yet another question!!!! :D Phones... when working can they call at anytime?? Or is there a sign-up? (CCC had sign-up) Just wondering if I need to up my limit with gtl!! LOL!!!

Yes, they have to sign up for the calls for particular timeslots. Like my man works most of the day, so he signs up for evening calls. Sometimes when he knows he has alot to talk to me about, he will have a friend or two sign up around his slot so he can do back to back calls.
My billing through GTL is direct billing, and my limit is 30 calls a month, but I hear there are other methods of payment like direct remit I believe it is called, so you can get more?? but anyway I hope this helps!
ddias84 07-13-2008, 01:31 PM Edsbaby I am pretty sure that you can visit your husband as soon as he gets onto the level one yard! I have been visting my husband on the level one yard since December and I have seen lots of girls visting there men as soon as they get on the yard, If I were you I would call and ask before making the trip but I think you will be fine. Level one visting is great the COs are actually really nice and its lowkey Friday visits are the best Sat and Sun can get a little crowded but we dont get termninated too often. I hope you have a great visit!! Hope this helps!
ladycindyblue 07-13-2008, 08:25 PM Ladies, can we wear flip flops into visiting, there has been alot of talk recently about whether we can or not. Some say yes, some say no, can anyone give a solid answer. Thanks very much
Cindy

YES you can!!!! I've been doing it for a few months now! Just not the plain black rubbery "shower shoes" as they call them in there. You can wear black ones, but they have to have some difference to them. They can be wedge like, etc.... backless sandals. LOVE IT.
ladycindyblue 07-14-2008, 07:37 AM That is really good news, thanks so much Junior!!!!! with the heat at that place its good to know that they are allowing the "cute" flip flops.
Cindy
sanchezct 07-14-2008, 10:49 AM C yard is so busy for visiting. The visiting CO's are cool but they terminate all the time because of overcrowding. I have never noticed terminations for other reasons.

HisWifey7707 07-14-2008, 05:55 PM Mail takes a little longer when it's going to the SHU or ASU. They say you can send up to 20 pictures at a time, but their rules really do vary depending on who opens the envelope and their mood!! And if you're planning on visiting you need to make an appointment the week before you plan to visit. The appointment line is open Mon-Fri between 12-2pm. Here's the number: 559-992-9444
**They send you to ASU if you get in trouble as your punishment and the SHU for certain affiliations, gang drop-outs, high profile or if you continue to be a threat or cause trouble.
edsbaby 08-09-2008, 06:55 PM I know level 1 visiting you can wear sleeveless tops. I've visited the last 3 weekends and saw women with them on. I think Level 1 is most relaxed than Level 3 with the dress code. I can only speak for Level 1.
SGV girl 08-23-2008, 01:26 AM They say you can send up to 20 pictures at a time
When I sent pics to Delano, and to CSP 1 the limit was 10 per envelope...any more than that, they rejected it and sent it back....just f.y.i ;)

Yeah, I can only send 10 also. I've never been able to send more than that. You can send 10 in each envelope, Soooo, if you want to send more than 10, you just send them separately, up to 10 per envelope; that I know for sure you can do.
amebre82 09-04-2008, 01:14 AM My husband just transferred from Lancaster reception Tuesday Sept 2, and I've long since been approved for visiting - I was wondering how long do I have to wait before I can go see him for a normal contact visi?? I've called the prison and can't seem to get a sure answer out of anyone. I would just hate to make the drive out there and then be told he can't have visits.

If he just got transfered, he is probably in Orientation, and I was told by staff, that inmates usually last around 10 days in Orientation. So probably a couple of weeks. But, it depends where they put him, his level, any violations, any lockdowns, etc. I would wait till you hear from him to see what he tells you. That's your best bet.
For visiting/lockdown information, you can call 1-800-374-8474, press 1, 4, 1 for Corcoran (aka: CSP1)
Best of luck to you!
edsbaby 09-04-2008, 02:10 AM What level is he?? My husband is level 1, He transferred on a Thursday and I visited that same weekend.

amebre82 09-04-2008, 02:52 PM Thank you both Junior'sQueen & edsbaby for replying back to my question. Okay... so I called the visiting appointment line and they said he's 3C01 which they said is a location that doesn't require appointment and yes he could have a visit-but then told me to speak with the sergent about my concerns on him being just brought there. I talked to the sergent and she called the housing unit which she then came back and said that he is in orientation and can only have 1hr visit by appt on friday & saturday only....I'm a little confused on why they are not uniformed in responses to people but being in this system for awhile now I guess I should be more than used to it. I guess my best bet would probably be just to wait like you said Junior'sQueen rather than driving the distance on a whim.....but I'm just super anxious to hug & kiss my husband he was in reception for 1month shy of a year:eek:
aliferzwife 09-04-2008, 05:24 PM If it was me and I'd waited 11 months, I'd wait the extra week and get a contact visit. :D That's just me though. LOL
Junior's Queen is right though - Orientation is usually about 7 to 10 days. Try calling next week about midweek and see what they tell you then.
edsbaby 09-04-2008, 11:08 PM I'm with aliferz and Junior's Queen, I'd wait the week or so for a contact visit. I think I just got lucky, plus my husband's only Level 1, so I'm guessing thats why there's no real orientation period.

amebre82 09-07-2008, 01:09 AM Yeah....I'm over the behind the glass deal!!! I'm ready to tackle him:p nah - but I am ready to get a kiss!!! Do any of you happen to know if the JPay site follows the inmate right away??? If I put money on there for him, it should post where he is now right???
Junior'sQueen 09-07-2008, 02:57 AM Yeah....I'm over the behind the glass deal!!! I'm ready to tackle him:p nah - but I am ready to get a kiss!!! Do any of you happen to know if the JPay site follows the inmate right away??? If I put money on there for him, it should post where he is now right???
His money does follow him. But if he is to transfer, I would wait at least a couple/few days after he transfers before putting more on his books. I have read where one or two girls have had trouble with the money following right away; but supposedly it is in the works of being transfered to him. Just stay on top of it with your man and JPay. Have him find out how much is on his books, versus how much you think should be on it. On JPay there is also a payment history. If there is any discrepancy, then follow up with JPay.
daisy may 09-07-2008, 11:29 AM Every prison varies but they usually release the money on Tuesdays, now here is the bad part. They are going to take your mans money and put it into a check and send it so it it will take roughly a month before it ends up on his books. like Junior said, wait a week before you send more because his jpay does not follow right away. WHat you can do is act like you are sending him a package and it will tell you the prison he is at. Once it shows this then he has been moved.
Also, you do not have to make an appt for orienatation staus to visit behoind glass but wait because they are usually off in 10 days. IF he was disciplinary free before his transfer he is allowed friday visitys.
WICKED LOVE 09-09-2008, 08:39 PM they just moved my man to 3A03 ad-seg does anyone know how visiting works for that yard? is he in the main visiting room now?, are the visits still just an hour
Sun'skitty 09-09-2008, 09:42 PM Mine is there too. It is one hour behind glass. You call 559-992-9444 from 12 to 2 on Mon. - Fri. to make an appt. Sometimes it is difficult to get through though, but keep trying!
SGV girl 09-11-2008, 01:58 AM I was wondering if anyone knew how to find out who his counselor is, and how to contact them? Do I just call up to CSP 1 or what? Or is there a certain #????? Thanks! :D

I believe you call the prison and ask for records. Ask the records person if they can tell you who his counselor is and the ext. :)

hi wicked love! my hunny just left 3a03-ASU, visits r cool just an hr:( sometimes the CO there would give me extra time, but that was only when i would make appointments at 1. ASU only gets 12 or 1 appointments.

Use P.O. Box 3466. My man, when he was on A Yard the P.O. Box was a number or so off. But now he is on B and it is 3466. Anyway, you can use that one, just as long as you put his CDC # and his housing.

every different location has a different po box number just write to the one he gave you or call down there and ask the mail room what his address is.
good luck
vskarski79 09-17-2008, 03:48 PM Does anyone know how visiting goes for PHU? Not the SNY part of PHU, but the other PHU... did that make any sense?
I saw that someone asked about pics... I sent 16 pictures in one envelope... and he called and was kind of irritated, cuz the CO took the envelope, and in front of everyone pulled out all the pics to make sure that there wasn't anything "inappropiate" in the pictures. He says that anything over ten pictures they do that too... so I end up sending multiple envelopes. There is always a loop hole!
AND!!! I have nothing but good luck with PrisonCallsOnline. Calls go straight to my cell and are like, just under $9 a piece. So I never miss calls. Only problem that I ran into is that sometimes I get telemarketers calling. It is a real CA number, but they warned me about that, and they automatically refunded all the connect fees for those 15 second telemarketer calls. It was nice...
edsbaby 09-20-2008, 10:05 PM Can hoodie's (like a sweater w/ a hood) be worn??
Junior'sQueen 09-20-2008, 10:17 PM Can hoodie's (like a sweater w/ a hood) be worn??
No, they can't be worn. At least at Corcoran. I have seen a few people in my days there say they have to change due to the Hoodie. Sorry!!!
A.C. Aldag 09-21-2008, 07:40 PM Hi everone, haven't been here for a while.
Had some questions about visiting as I get to go the first two weekends of October!
I know we aren't supposed to wear red, bue, khaki, etc., but if a skirt is primarily black with a few red or tan flowers or designs, is that OK?
Are Birkenstock sandals all right? They have metal buckles.
Is walking onto the grounds allowed? Cuz I don't drive!
Any help you can give is appreciated. :)

Wow AC, haven't seen you around lately. Good to see you back! The skirt your described should be fine. As long as the primary color is the black. As for the sandals, that is fine too, because you take them off and put them up on the counter before you walk through the metal detector, so those are fine. :D
As for walking on the Grounds, I am not 100% sure, but I am almost positive you can NOT. I believe you will have to at least take a taxi or some kind of shuttle in.
I hope this helps some. Take care, good luck and good to see ya again.

Jazzmoe 09-22-2008, 11:17 PM Are we allowed to wear leggings... like under a long shirt or dress??
Junior'sQueen 09-22-2008, 11:45 PM Are we allowed to wear leggings... like under a long shirt or dress??
You know, that is a good question...........However, I am going to guess and assume they won't allow it if it is under a long shirt. Only because they don't let alot of girls in with skinny jeans. (they have let a couple slip through however) As I have heard them say quite a few times, "nothing form fitting". But then again, it can all depend who is working processing???
But, you can always try, and if it is not allowed, then just have an extra change of clothese in your car. ;)
Good Luck!
Jazzmoe 09-23-2008, 12:26 AM Thanks girl... so crazy how different prison to prison is...
We were allowed to wear them at the last spot and just getting my self together before I make my grand appearance... lol... and I aint trying to go back to change... thats missing precious time...
So I will come in something I know wont be a send back to the car fit...
I see also we arent allowed to wear the extra jewelry... my nose is pierced... and doesnt come out... will I have to go get it removed?? or will i get in with it?
Also i have toe rings... will they notice them? Or what should I do?
edsbaby 09-23-2008, 12:34 AM At Level 1 visiting, I wear my nose piercing. I have seen a girl, told to remove her piercing (the one right above the chin, right under the lip) in order to visit at the other Levels. I think she ended up cutting it off.
Thanks girl... so crazy how different prison to prison is...

Hey Jazz! I hear ya about the time being precious, and not wanting to go back to change. As for the jewelry, YEP, you unfortunately will have to take out any extra piercings anywhere other than your ears, such as your nose. I have seen many girls with tongue, boobie, nose, etc. piercings having to take them out and putting them in the lockers there.
As for the toe rings, you know, honestly that one I can not remember for 100%, so I can't give you a solid answer on that one. Sorry!
Have a GREAT visit, and welcome to the Corcoran Family. ;)
P.S. I just noticed Edsbaby's response, and I do believe it does have to do with levels. So which level is your man?
Jazzmoe 09-23-2008, 12:48 AM Thanks girl...
My hubby is level 4... that bites... it depends on levels.. what crap and un consistent but doesnt surprise me... I have seen so much as I am sure you have too...

I PERSONALLY HAVEN'T SEEN IT CHALLENGED, BUT I'M SURE YOU CAN TRY?? The question would be then, IF you were not to get your way, could you take it out right there? Or does it have to be professionally removed? I'm sorry......... My man use to be level 4 back in the day, and yes, it is always different. Best of Luck Jazz!
Jazzmoe 09-23-2008, 12:59 AM Well dont know if I want to be the newbie challenging anything... not just yet anyways....but wondered... I know that the prison are allowed to enforce some of their own rules... and this might be the situation... maybe I will hit an Ombudsmen and see there take... or get at someone in Sac just by way of inquiry...
I can take it out... but wondered if I could say...it doesnt... but its not worth risking... so freaking annoying... I have had my nose peirced since I was 18... almost 20 years... wow... Im getting up there... ha ha...
My hubby was level 3 at one time... but not anymore... he said he will be home before he gets back to level 3... lol

edsbaby 09-23-2008, 09:49 AM I should know this but I don't! LOL! Can black jeans be worn??
Junior'sQueen 09-23-2008, 10:10 AM I should know this but I don't! LOL! Can black jeans be worn??
Yes Edsbaby! As long as they are not totally faded. I've worn black jeans before, a few times. But the usual, always have extra clothes in the car, just in case. ;)
hissunshine4evr 09-23-2008, 06:14 PM ya ALWAYS take extra clothes because the friends on the outside will no longer be there after the 28th of this month so if i were you i would bring even a back up for your backup. good luck all

penners wife is absolutely CORRECT. Friends on the Outside (the trailer on the property) will no longer be available for a change of clothes, etc!!! It will be closing! :(
SO EVERYONE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 1 - 2 EXTRA OUTFITS IN THE CAR AT ALL TIMES! SHOES INCLUDED, JUST IN CASE YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED IN WITH WHAT YOU ORIGINALLY HAVE ON.
Best of Luck to everyone!!
edsbaby 09-23-2008, 06:41 PM Thanks Queen's!! I could not remember about the black jeans!! LOL!! I was going to wear some last Sunday, but didn't want to change if I was wrong!! I guess I should have listened to that little voice!! ;)
I learned long ago to ALWAYS keep extra clothes/shoes in the car. As well as sweaters/jackets, hooded/non hooded. I'm ready for all types of weather, as well as clothes changes, if needed!! :D

edsbaby 09-25-2008, 11:52 AM It might not be a good idea to white out things on the application, you should just cross it out and re-write it. But if you did hopefully there won't be any problems with it.

MRS.Q 09-25-2008, 12:08 PM hello everyone,
I just found out today by calling Wasco Prison that my husband was transferred two days ago to Corcoran. We both knew he was going to be transferred here we just did not know when. He was at Wasco reception for 9 months now finally the ball is rolling. Thank God! I do believe my husband will be in the shu. I know I will wait for his letter telling me that he has been transferred poor guy, I tell him that I call every week just to see if he has been moved or not. Well, I do have some questions:
1. When is the earliest I can visit my husand if he just got transferred 9/23/08?
2. If he is in the SHU I do have to make an appointment right?
3. When can I send him a package and also how about books and art supplies? When can I do all of these things?
Thank you God Bless all of us
TnT=Dynomyte 09-26-2008, 09:22 PM Hi everyone, I just received a letter from my husband stating that he has been endorsed to go to Corcoran. He is at Avenal now in the "HOLE":( He should be there sometime next week. I have a couple of questions. He will have 2 do 3 years in closed custody because his sentence was over 14 years. Which is crazy because he was at Avenal Level 2 for almost 2 years. His counselor was going over his paperwork to approve our family visit and noticed this "BIG ERROR". However, he will deal with it. So my questions are:
1. Does anyone visit level 3 yard? If so how is the visiting there?
2. How long will it take for him to receive contact visits?
3. Can someone please shed some sort of light as to exactly what is closed custody?
From what the CO told me is that they wanna make sure he wont try to escape since he was sentenced to 16 years.
thanks...
2.
Jazzmoe 09-26-2008, 11:14 PM I dont know about level 3 but I will ask your other questions...
He will not have contact visits til he gets off orientation... it will up to 15 working days... sometimes its sooner... depends on how busy the prison is and how quickly they get the men thru the orientation...
Closed Custody is less privileges... it depends on what he is Closed A or Closed B and it is dependent upon points...
jessna 10-17-2008, 10:38 AM Hello ladies,
I am new to Corcran, my husband was just transfered here from High desert after a long year and half. I just called records and found out he is in 3A05. Can anyone give me some info on how long orentation is? When can I expect a call? How is visting, I noticed that you can visit on fridays???? He has 5 months to go so I would love to visit him as much as possible. As much info as you can give me will be truly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!;)
BlueIDGrl 10-17-2008, 04:11 PM I'm gonna go see my friend for the first time. He's in CSP Corcoran which is almost 300 miles away from where I live. I'm all approved to go see him and I have cute clothes that I _know_ I can wear (yes, including the bras without underwires - sheesh)...but I have no fricken clue what to expect. How early should I get to the gate to be checked in? Is it easy to find your way around, like lots of signs and stuff? Is it obvious where the first visitors have to go (you know, to make sure I'm on the approval list), or should I just admit to a guard that I'm totally clueless and ask them to direct me? Any hotel recommendations?
QBABY08 10-17-2008, 05:27 PM no the visting is not so bad but yeauh where do u live in cali
jessna 10-17-2008, 05:55 PM Thanks for responding, I live Los angeles county.. Do you know how long it will take before I get a call? and are their many lockdowns here in corocran?
thanks. ;)
hissunshine4evr 10-17-2008, 06:21 PM you cant go on the grounds until 830 and not a minute earlier. and just tell the guy at the gate you dont know where to go and he will tell you. then when you get into the building just go to the front counter on the left side and tell them you have never been there before. they are really helpful and will help you out. good luck and i hope you have a great visit
SGV girl 10-17-2008, 06:21 PM Hi! My man was just transfered from Corcoran, but I can try and help you out. Corcoran is not generally a reception center, so he should be able to call, write, and visit with you as soon as he settles in. There is visiting Fridays, from 12:30pm to 7pm. As long as he remains discipline free, he should be able to visit, no problem...and as long as he isn't in Ad Seg or the SHU, they should be contact visits. Now, be warned that the mail in Corcoran is some times slooooooooooooooow...you just have to be patient.
I found Corcoran to be alot less stress than it was made out to be, and as a general rule, the officers are fairly efficient and courteous. Wish you the best, the ladies in this forum are very helpful and knowledgeable...I miss them already!
SGV girl 10-17-2008, 06:28 PM Visiting is Fri from 12:30pm to 7pm, and Sat/Sun it is 8am to 2:30pm. You can not be on the prisongrounds before 12:30pm, or 8 am respectively..they will turn you right around. You will pull up to the gate, the guard will check your id, ask if you have been there before...if your answer is no, he will explain the process and direct you to the appropriate place...it's very easy...you leave the guard, drive straight until you see the visitor parking lot on your left, and park. There is a building right by that parking lot...not the trailer in the first corner you get to, but in the upper left of the parking lot...you will know what I mean...you go in, go to the front desk, ask for a visitor pass...they will ask you, Level 1, or 3. Once you fill that out, turn it in, wait for your name to be called, they will direct you what to do and where to go.
Corcoran visiting is never empty, so you will see what others are doing..follow them! Happy visit, and good luck!

Junior'sQueen 10-18-2008, 02:15 AM Hello ladies,

Hi there and welcome! So I take it he was in reception at High Desert and got tranfered to Corcoran for his remaining time? Well, if he has been discipline free for the past 90 days he can have contact visits. Also, I use to visit in A visiting, and it rarely get crowded in there, but they tend to be slightly stricter, but they are pretty fair & cool in there too. Orientation takes usually 10-14 days, all depending on how busy they are, etc. As for Lockdowns, well, on A yard, there is more lockdowns on that yard then any of the yards. Always call the 800 number before visiting to see who is locked down and who has visits. Call: 1-800-374-8474, press 1-4-1 to get to Corcoran info and whatever date it says, even if it is two weeks already passed, you go by the last message. As for how long will it take to get a call, probably sometime after Orientation is over. Unfortunately, we all have to learn to be patient, especially with Corcoran! Best of luck to you!

Hi. Everyone here has given you good advice here. Here's another piece, you can only wear one ring set, one necklace, a watch, one earring set; above a level one visit, there is no nose piercings, no belly or boobie piercings. And you can bring up to $50 for food, and they have a change machine inside the processing room that changes up to a $20 bill, so you don't have to bring $1 bills to make the change. (Only dollar coins are allowed in) OR you can bring up to $50 coins before hand.
If you have anymore questions, ask away! Good Luck!
EDIT NOTE: As for hotels, if you want to stay as close as possible, then I would recommend either the Country Inn or the Budget Inn, which really are the only two in town. :) OR stay in Tulare at the Motel 6. Tulare has more dining, shopping, etc. Corcoran is very dull and boring place. There is only one real main street with stores, etc. Here are the links to the Country Inn & the Budget Inn. Mention you are visiting the prison, and you usually get a small discount.
http://corcorancountryinn.com/ I would recommend this one first because it further away from the train tracks.
http://www.stayanight.com/corcoranbudgetinn/ Budget inn isn't bad, but................ ;)

There are different P.O. Boxes for different yards I believe. When my man was on A yard and moved to B yard, it changed. B yard, at least for my man, we use 3466. When he was on A it 346_ cant remember the last number, but it was different.
Go with what your man gave you. Yes, there is Orientation when they arrive, which usually last up to 14 days.
Hope this helps.
jessna 10-23-2008, 11:18 AM Thank you Junior's Queen.. I am about to send him some photos and I want him to get them...;)

First of all, I don't know what YARD your man is on, but I was there last night and my man said nothing about any lockdown. Nothing has happened on his yard. There WAS a modified program running two weeks ago, but not now. But again, I don't know what yard your man is on. My man would have said something.
As for JPay, just go to www.JPay.com (http://www.JPay.com) and it is real simple to do. Just follow the directions. It's very quick and easy!
As for GTL, go to www.correctionsgtl.com (http://www.correctionsgtl.com) or
If you do not have an GTL direct billed account, our customer service representatives are available to help our customers Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until midnight Eastern Time at 1-800-231-0193.
Billing Inquiry Staff Telephone: 877.650.4249
Hope this helps.
SGV girl 11-01-2008, 06:27 PM Usually...and this is what happened to me...if GTL can not directly bill your phone company because they do not have an agreement with them (such is my case, as I'm out of state) you are required to fax them a copy of your phone bill. It then takes them 3-5 BUSINESS days, to even begin to set up your account. They took forever, almost a month with mine...sorry...that is GTL for you.
Junior'sQueen 11-01-2008, 07:10 PM With me and GTL, what happened, everything was good within 48 hours, I was up and running again. If your landline phone company is Verizon, they will just bill on that phone bill and you have no worries. I believe POSSIBLY AT&T too??? That one I'm questionable.
Anyway, my landline is Cox (which my TV Cable & Internet are too)....so, since Cox no longer would put GTL calls on their account, I had to make the account with GTL, show them that was my phone by providing my phone bills to them, and within 48 hours I was up and running!
I had to put up front I believe it was $50 dollars or so and you get 6+ calls with that. And then for a couple months had to pay the bill on time and they kept increasing it, till I got to 30 calls a month. But this is for a Direct Remit Account.
There are different types of accounts you can have. So just inquire with GTL about the different accounts also.
Best of Luck to ya!

OneManWoman 11-02-2008, 02:16 AM Welcome.............yes you are in the right forum as 3B04 is Corcoran 1. You can wear all color of jeans except for blue or orange. I visit C Yard and it is ALWAYS busy. Someone will be along to help you that visits B Yard. They are very strict on showing affection and will not hesitate to terminate you immediately. It sucks, but it is what it is. The staff in processing are very nice and helpful. Bring a black loose fitting outfit for back up just in case. Have a nice visit !
boo's princess 11-02-2008, 02:39 AM welcome to pto, good luck on your first visit.

Hi there and welcome.
Well, B visiting is not as strict as C visiting. B is slightly more easy going. Yes, you can wear jeans, and if they are black, I've been told before, do not have them faded. And ALWAYS have a back set of clothes in your car, just in case the first one doesn't cut it. No underwire bras either. Check out the Corcoran Prison Guide that is a "sticky" under Corcoran that I just updated. It has everything you need to know in there. The stickies are at the top of the page under the Corcoran Forum.
If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask.
MChant 11-02-2008, 06:29 PM do the jeans have to be black?...or can they be any color?..thanks for the help.
Junior'sQueen 11-02-2008, 07:46 PM do the jeans have to be black?...or can they be any color?..thanks for the help.
I always go with black; one, it's the safest color; two, it is more slimming ;)
As long as they are not blue, green, or red. Orange is questionable.
And they can NOT be "Skinny" Jeans. Skinny Jeans come across as "to tight" and I have seen many girls get turned away wearing black skinny jeans.
psalm3418 11-06-2008, 01:29 AM Hi! I'm not sure where to even start... He was just transferred to Corcoran on Monday. Do I wait for him to write me to tell me what his address will be? He's a level 3. I think he will be in the "SNY"? If "Orientation" is 10 -14 days, do I wait til then to call to find out what "unit" he is in? He sent me a visitation approval form from DVI, but I didn't get it sent in before he was moved. Will he have to send me one from Corcoran?
I appreciate any help you can give me.

You can call records at Corcoran and ask his specific address. The yards have different P.O. Boxes. 1-559-992-8800 and once you go to Options, press the number for records. When you find out his address, write him and send the visiting form with your letter. I have always sent my approval form with my letters and never got returned or lost and always approved. They use the same form everywhere.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

hissunshine4evr 11-06-2008, 08:07 AM you can call right now to get his address. when my fiance was on orientation on that yard they kept him in the same spot when he went off. also when my sister in law sent in her visiting form she got approved really fast!! and no he doesn't have to send you a new form! just so you know there are almost never ever any issues on that yard! i say almost because theres always little stuff but nothing ever too major! sleep well knowing that hes on that side i know i do! good luck and if you have and questions about C yard don't hesitate to ask!:)

Mail times vary from place to place. It's been my experience that post cards and greeting cards arrive faster sometimes. If you do send a post card make sure you put your return address on it. :)
Junior'sQueen 11-06-2008, 01:31 PM Ok. I've got his bed # and all. Do I address the envelope with:
Bed 3C01 xxxx
or is it just,
3C01 xxxx
I know the rest of the address to fill in, just not the bed part.
Thanks!
INMATE NAME & CDC #

Glad you got the information you were looking for!! If you do send a card don't send one with music or lots of glitter.
edsbaby 11-21-2008, 02:53 PM I was wondering is there a certain address to send in the visiting form?? Also.... how long does Cor1 take for approval?

I have always sent my visiting forms, including renewals, in a letter I send to my brat. ;) Even the one renewal at Corcoran.
It's never been lost, it always gets to who it needs, and it took approximately 3-4 weeks for approval. BUT since folks are gonna be going on "holiday vacations", it may take a week or two longer.
Harv*sGirl 11-22-2008, 04:17 PM I have never had to file a renewal yet... may I ask when (not specifically when, but how long after your originally filed) and why you had to file a renewal?!?!
I am worried that one day I am going to have to reapply. My baby's dad has been in and out for a while now. The last time I applied was 02/2007. I think I read in the title 15 that you are suposed to renew every 2 years...Is that right?
edsbaby 11-22-2008, 05:28 PM It's suppose to be every 2 yrs. I haven't done a renewal, yet. I did however have to update my visiting info when I changed my name.
Once they are paroled and go back in, you need to re-apply. At least I had too.

At Corcoran in the visitors center they will call you up to the counter to fill out the renewal when the time is right (after you have been visiting for 2 years). Don't worry about it, it's not stressful. Just remember to put down any brushes with the law you may have had (in my case it was an expensive speeding ticket).

Yes, as poodlegirl said, if you are there at Corcoran in Processing, and it has been over 2 years since you updated your form, they will just call you up to fill out right there, but you will still be able to visit. So all is good.
edsbaby 11-23-2008, 01:56 AM Visiting hours on Friday, the day after Turkey, are still 1230-7, right? My husband wanted me to check, gees, it would be easier for him to just ask a CO! LOL!! I told him I don't see why it would change just because it's the day after. I'm guessing, it's because they(inmates) don't work on Thursday/Friday.

This is always hit and miss. I applied while my boyfriend was in reception at SQ on a violation in Feb 07. Since then he has been back 4 times or so, and I have never had to reapply, however I used to visit a friend of mine, and I applied when he was at HDSP on his term. He went back to reception at SQ on a violation and they made me reapply. It happened to a girlfriend of mine to. As far as I can tell if you applied at SQ in the first place they don't make you reapply every time they get out and come back, but if you were approved when they were at a different prison, you usually do.
Jazzmoe 11-23-2008, 10:36 PM I verified with a CO today.... visits Friday are the regular schedule... Turkey day will be the hours of Sat & Sun visits... YAY!!!

Yes, it's still normal hours. It's probably best if you get there right at 12:30, 'cuz it's going to be super busy. Last year - day after thanksgiving- I didn't get there til 1:30 or so, and ended up not being processed until after the count was over at 5:30.
Jazzmoe 11-23-2008, 10:37 PM Question... I read that red is not allowed or blue... does that mean PERIOD... or if you have a little bit of red or blue in a shirt is that OK??
hissunshine4evr 11-23-2008, 11:35 PM ya it just cant be solid red or blue
Shorty'swifey 11-25-2008, 07:24 PM Hi! I found out a couple of weeks back my husband got his endorsement papers for Corcoran . . . he was originally going to Salinas . . . but when he got his bus ticket it was for the old Corcoran. Can anyone give me the heads up on how it is in visiting L3 SNY. Also he has been in Ad. Seg. since August, but was not given any write ups or 115's . . . and since he's review happen at the same time and he was lowered to a Level 3, they are transferring him out . . . Also am coming from L.A./O.C. border, how long is the drive and is there a train close by . . . I remember seeing a train on MNBC show on Corcoran . . . um, oh, also is the grapevine the only way to get there? Is there another route, I have night vision and reading the threads about the fog . . . well, am concern with the drive.
Thanks a bunch in advance. . . OH! How long does orientation take if he is coming from Ad. Seg, even if he was cleared and will I get Friday visits, since he wasn't written up or anything? Okay thatz it . . . I talked to the one of the other wifeys on the Salinas site and she told me that "there were a lot of nice ladies" there in Corcoran. So am looking forward to going there. Well Thanks:o

HI THERE AND WELCOME TO CORCORAN! I can answer some of the questions for you........ SNY is visiting room "C" (c yard) I'm not in C, but I see all the folks that visit in C and it is the most crowded out of the visiting rooms. You really have to not try to sneak extra kisses or extra hugs, otherwise, C room tends to terminate quickly, without warning. I've seen it and that's what I hear. You really need to behave in there.:rolleyes:
As for the distance from LA/OC Border, the distance driving is about 3 hours, maybe with a few minutes, that includes a couple potty breaks. There is a train near by Corcoran, but I've never taken it coming from the southern direction.... and I hear it is more hassle than anything to try to get the train up there. It is faster and easier to drive. Or get to know people, and over time, possibly carpool. Just be careful!!
As for Orientation, orientation at Corcoran usually lasts 10-14 days.
By the way, "old Corcoran" is also known as Corcoran 1 or CSP-1.
I hope that has helped you with some of your questions. Take care and Good Luck! Here is the link to the CORCORAN VISITING GUIDE ON WHAT THEY ALLOW AND DON'T ALLOW. GO TO THE THIRD PAGE of this guide:

I take the train up there, it's a bit of a hassle from where I come from Ventura/San Fernando Valley border. But seeing as I don't have a car or anyone to carpool I do what I have to do to see him. Once I get to Union Station in LA I'm good, but getting to and from there is my problem.
Shorty'swifey 11-26-2008, 11:25 AM Thank you ladies for all the information.
I just hope he gets up there before Christmas . . .
I really would like to have my contact visits again . . .
Well, all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
And thanks again :D
hissunshine4evr 11-26-2008, 12:06 PM hello shorty'swife. my man is on c yard and it is coo. i love having him on that yard it helps me sleep at night. as for visiting it does get crowded and they used to terminate like crazy but now they are doubling up the tables once it gets crowded. also if you take children they won't double you up. also your first 2 visits you won't get terminated. and like junior'squeen said they are STRICT. you get one kiss in the beginning and in the end and thats it. you just have to follow the rules exactly or else you'll have to deal with them always pulling your man away and talking to him or terminating you. they don't mess around at all. good luck on your visits:) if you have any other queestions don't hesitate to ask.
OneManWoman 11-26-2008, 05:15 PM Yes they WILL terminate your first, second and whatever else visits you have unless you meet the 250 mile distance. My husband was in the SHU for 18 months and we had our first contact visit on a Friday. They terminated us after an hour due to overcrowding! Talk about heart wrenching.
hissunshine4evr 11-26-2008, 06:19 PM WOW that is terrible! i was told that you can't get terminated and i wasn't and c fills up really quick. you should look into it. because i even told the co's when i took my sister in law and they didnt terminate us because it was her first visit.
OneManWoman 11-27-2008, 03:36 AM They don't care on C Yard. It was our anniversary too. My husband was so upset he took it up with the Visiting Lt. and it was out of his hands. It's all up to Fritz, Diaz and Caspy. That's just the way C rolls......................
You may not have been terminated because they are doubling up now? But they weren't when we were.
hissunshine4evr 11-27-2008, 11:34 AM WOW thats terrible i'm sorry that happend to you:(
hopefully it will be better next time
