View Full Version : desperately seeking help!!!
maryanncann 05-01-2008, 05:51 PM I am currently searching for a very good friend of mine I can only assume is serving in the lower mainland area.. His name is Derek Post and he was sentenced for the Breann Voth murder....I cannot find his family and we have no mutual friends...can anyone tell me how I may find out how to write to him and where he is??
Thank you in advance for any help!
I am not familiar with the system in BC, is there a assessment centre in BC like Millhaven is in ONT? I'd look there first.
Hopefully someone from BC can help you, in the meantime good luck.
Our privacy laws in Canada make it extremely hard to find a prisioner.
maryanncann 05-01-2008, 06:55 PM i know! I have tried everything i could think of and stumbled on this site...I can only hope that someone sees this post who knows Derek....but i wont stop searching
His family must be in need of support. Who knows maybe a member will show up here. In the meantime good luck with your search.

maryanncann 05-02-2008, 09:03 AM i dont know what vine is????????? please explain do u know something
spacecase77 05-02-2008, 10:43 AM What I would do if it was me would be to pick a remand centre in BC (even though he is sentenced), write him a letter and send it.
Hopefully it would be forwarded.
If it gets returned, I would then photocopy that letter and send it to each sentenced facility in BC.
It isn't always good to list locations or even names of inmates, especially around this type of conviction (in my opinion).
There is no inmate locator in Canada and I think that is a very good thing.
maryanncann 05-03-2008, 12:21 AM I dont understand why not but then this is all new to me. It seems other people have posted names ...I didnt know any other way to go about it? As to writing I would have already but my cousin has a friend in prison and she has to put his number? on the letter....since i dont know where he is I dont have any id numbers for him and figured they would just get sent back. I apologize if I have been out of line....Ive been searching now for years and have exhausted all avenues i can think of on my own. Just looking for help.
spacecase77 05-03-2008, 07:48 AM No I wasn't suggesting it isn't allowed, that is strictly my own opinion.
Mostly for his safety due to the notariety of the case.
I don't put numbers on any of my letters I send to remand, provincial and federal fAcilities in BC, and none seem to have gone missing so far (touch wood).
I am so sorry if you thought I was coming down on you, that was not my intention at all. I hope you are able to find him, and that was the only way I could think of doing so, and is probably what I would try if it were me. This is a great website and is probably your best chance of being able to fin information about prisons anywhere.
Again I apologize and hope you are able to get in touch with him.
maryanncann 05-03-2008, 01:33 PM i will try what youve suggested...i have no idea how to find out but i will google all available places in BC where he could be .... its a murder charge so I assume thats a max prison but I guess i should also send to minimum its his first offense? thank you for your help Im oversensitive due to my frustration and ignorance to how everything works......much thanks again!
spacecase77 05-03-2008, 07:34 PM no worries,
Click HERE (http://canadianprisons.6.forumer.com/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=407a2b2c304a0cc1213085e87f68528d) for provincial facilities (under 2 year sentence)
Click HERE (http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/region/nat-fac-dir-eng.shtml#pa3) for Federal institutions (over 2 year sentence)
I would imagine he's in federal, this is a start as he may not even be in BC.
Also, RRAC (Regional Reception and Assessment Centre ) is probably where he would have gone fiorst so if you sent something there it may be forwarded on.
maryanncann 05-05-2008, 08:40 AM Thank u so much!!! I naively assumed he would be in BC. i will start my letter writing and hope 4 the best! what else can i do? cheers.
spacecase77 05-05-2008, 10:17 AM Oh I don't think it's naive to assume he would be in BC. It's the logical thought. It just depends on a lot of factors and considering the crime he was convicted of, it's 'possible' BC may not be able to provide him with security, that's just my opinion though.
wendy tyler 05-05-2008, 10:24 AM maryanncan, if the system in Canada is anything like the US, you should be able to cantact any reception centre and get the info. you are looking for. They are all tied into the same data base here, and anyone of them can tell you were he is, by this I mean statewide for you provincewide. PS I used to live in London, Ont.
spacecase77 05-05-2008, 10:28 AM Typically they won't give out that info for privacy reasons.
I have a brother who is in and have had to talk to various admin people, they will answer my questions but tell me they can't confirm whether he is there or not.
I say I just visited him yesterday, last weekend whatever, and they say, "That doens't mean he's here now, and I can't tell you either way".
It's all worth a shot though I would guess.
lilystacey 05-06-2008, 01:16 AM In Canada, when convicted of 1st or 2nd degree murder The inmate MUST be put in Maximum security for the first 2yrs of his sentence. ( It's been mandatory since the conservative gov. took over) No matter the record of the inmate ie: no record before the offence or long record doesn't matter. (This is my husband's 1st arrest and conviction, but murder convictions must serve the first 2yrs in max. period.)
So I would write both the "reception" facility and the BC Fed Max institutions.
I've never written any "number" on any of our mail. Just his full name and the instution address and I've never had any problem.
Don't bother calling the institutions..lol.. there crazy about privacy and security.
Your best bet would be contacting his Laywer, they will know where he is, and if not they can easily find him for you.
Good Luck!

You can phone 604-796-2121 you can ask for visiting, or parole officers, or Chaplain, explain your friends name, your relationship, and ask for his FPS Number. That is his institutional number. If you send mail without the number, there is about a 90 percent chance that visiting will still pass it on, but with FPS number, it'll always find him, even if he is moved.
As he has life 25, he'll be at Kent for quite sometime, and eventually be moved to Mountain Instition which is next door to Kent. His earliest release date will be in 2025, but if he becomes a model inmate, he can go to camp long before that and apply for passes. Either way, a long road.
