Hello, I need help can anyone tell me how the Jester I SAFP is? My Husband was sentenced by the judge to go to SAFP for substance abuse but for some reason they have him in MHMR facility and he does not understand why when he is not crazy. Is it because he has a medical condition (Asthma) or did they make a mistake. I am trying to get some answers but noone can help. The nurse there at the facility said that they have not sat with him yet to determine his condition what does that mean, he is not mentally ill he is there to get help with the substance abuse. How is it there is it bad I am so worried for him can someone please help me and give me some answers so I can give my poor husband the answers when I do see him. Thanks for your help. God Bless.

Hi acard - and welcome!

Hon, as far as Jester Unit itself, I don't know much. I do know that it's a special needs unit. So, I would think that depending on the severity of his asthma, that might be it.

SAFP is substance abuse felony punishment. It's a behavior modification program for dependency issues. Phase I, II, III of the program which is what your husband will be on is normally a six month program which consists of various forms of "group" type of counseling. It is a rigorous and structured program. Personally, my experience with my son - it sincerely helped him. It's not the cure all and some question certain methods but for us we chose to try to understand why certain things were done as they were. With that understanding my son could apply it.

Please calm down. Your husband is fine. And you must take care of yourself during this journey.

Hope this helps a little - but if you have questions, just ask away. I'm sure someone with personal experience with Jester will come along soon.

Jester I is a SAFP unit with drug abuse programs. Jester III is a regular medical unit with a trusty camp. Jester IV is the psych unit. Your husband is in the right place if he was sentenced to SARP. My husband was in the trusty camp at Jester III and worked at Jester I for awhile - I just confirmed it with him that no part of Jester I was medical whatsoever.

My husband was at JIII for over a year and worked at both JI and J4. He's been home for over 2 years now, so if you have any questions, please just ask and if we can help, we will! That's why we are here!

See my post under Texas Introductions. I just came back from a Jester 1 visit and all the details are there. My son says it is a "special needs" unit and psych evals are done and meds prescribed if neccessary. It really is more about behavior modification program for substance abusers than anything else (so says my son). It is also a nine month program not six.

Calalily's intro post can be found here (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352242) - it has some wonderful info about Jester I there.
