Hi, my son is new to Fort Dodge prison, he is 30 and wanted to get his GED, but was told it was for prisoners 25 & under, why is this, the court said he had to get his GED? I also wanted you to know that since my son has been in prison, I started a free penpal site for prisoners, I hope it's okay to give the site address here.

Hello, Buddy, and welcome to Iowa forum. Who ever told your son that doesn't know what they are talking about or maybe that's Ft. Dodge's rule. I doubt that, though. I know of other prisoners in Iowa in other prisons that worked on their GED and they were older than your son. I just don't know where else he could look or who to ask. I would encourage him & you to keep looking. How come a court order to get his GED doesn't make the prison comply?

Checked out your site. Nice. How did you come by the names from out of state.

I have a pen pal that's at Ft. Dodge. Correction he was there for 2 1/2 years, but 2 weeks ago was moved to Newton min.

Buddy,

A warm welcome to PTO and the Iowa forum! I hope someone comes along soon who can help you out. I've never heard of GED being denied anyone...who knows.

Happy Thursday everybody!

Even if that's the rule where he is, you can still send him the book to study for the test, and then I'm sure he can take the test from in there, too, although he might have to pay for it himself as opposed to the prison paying for it.

Thank you all for your advice. As for the names on my site, I got them from my son and from some of my other penpals, and some were sent to me from a family member.
