I just got it in the mail today...I'm waiting for husband to get prepaid collect calls to me so I don't know yet. It's a simple small little thing that connects to your computer USB port. Just plug in and put your phone cord in it and you're up and running!! SIMPLE!!

Before getting all excited about this jack - read ALL the FAQs at the web site. This thing is not available in my area code and may not be available in yours either. Also, my phone and computer are plugged into the same jack right now....so how would this new jack work if I have to take the cord from my telephone to connect to this jack - and go thru the computer for my calls? Lots and lots of questions!!

You can choose any area code you want...:) I'm suggesting if you can choose the area code that is near the prison your loved one is at. This only makes sence if your loved one can use pre-paid calling cards or you are currently signed up paying for Prison Calls Online or an other collect call billing service. If you are doing that and paying a regular phone bill and you want to save on your monthly regular phone bill, and the collect calls are higher because your loved one is out of state or something.

This doesn't work well with DIAL UP service.:smash: Only DSL or Cable high speed broadband service. Your current phone line plugged into your modem can be left just as it is. You are mailed the adapter to plug into your USB port on your computer. You then plug in your phone into the adapter. Your computer will recognize the new device and it will automaticlly start to upload on to your computer. You register and pick your area code and prefix.

You can set up a headset and dial directly from your computer if you want. If you have a lap top you can take this with you when you travel. Or you can put it on any computer at any location you want. It moves with you or stays with you. I only paid $100 bucks for this and that's all I will ever pay for the next 5 years. Considering I was paying $30 per month for phone. That's a $1700 savings for me.

If your loved one is out of the state or county you live in and they are calling from a different area code...if you change your area code it could considerly drop your phone bill.

I definantly suggest you read all the FAQ's on the website too!

I just got mine in the mail today and the phone works great! There is a slight delay...just like a cell phone might have.

At any rate I think it's QUITE A DEAL!!

If the prison calls to verify the number and they ask why your address doesn't match the area code of the phone # you gave them...you can tell them that you have a home phone that you can choose the area code and this doesn't violate the cell phone rule avoiding getting your phone calls suspended.

I have had MJ for quite a few months. You can call out or someone can call in. I am in the Atlanta area. It does work. Sometimes the quality is fair, usually good. I got it to see what it is like and as a backup.
Also suggest you check out GrandCentral.com. Free incoming local number. Will ring automatically to one or more phones.
It is free and part of Google. Worth checking out. I use it a lot when there is a call (like from a doctor) that I do not want to miss under any circumstances. It rings to my home and cell at the same time. I am pretty sure you can have the call directed to any phone in the US for no cost. Good luck

you don't need a land line only a computer with broadband that way you have a home phone too...just an inexpensive home phone that it all this is. It's a good thing for those who have inmates out of state so you can choose your area code close to where they are at saving on the collect calls (from prison calls on line collect calls of course)

I just bought it and I cannot get the freaking thing configured. I am going to call tech support tomorrow with hopes of getting it working. I thought it was the greatest thing too when I ordered it...not so sure now!!!

Mine worked right away, I plugged it into my computer and it brought up the website and put a shorcut on my desktop I filled out all the online info I picked my area code it gave me a number and I plugged my phone in and voilla I had dial tone....I hope that you are able to get yours working....the only thing that I didn't like about it was there is only on line chat customer service.

I only pay $15 extra on my regular phone bill to make unlimited national long distance calls. Friends told me Vonage would work to avoid the high out of state phone rates from prison BUT you have to have an address in the same state as they are in on the call list. When you visit they look at the address on your ID. I've been told people will go to seg if they find you are trying to circumvent out of state rates.

Does anyone know if they offer virtual #'s? That way you can have your local # and a virtual # closest to your mans prison.

I was just going to make a thread for MagicJack and I saw this one here.

I've had MagicJack for almost a year now. Some observations:

Customer service and technical support from MagicJack is horrific but what do you expect at these prices? If you're good with computers and figuring out stuff on your own it may still be well worth it.

It is not intended to replace ordinary phone service. In other words I wouldn't count on having their 911 service if it came to that. If the power goes out you have no phone service.

There's a forum called magicjacksupport that is great. It is an unofficial forum that developed out of MagicJacks terrible customer service and technical support. You will find more help from these people and in the wealth of information that has built up.

MagicJack also seems to work very well on older computers. For example Pentium III's running at say 800 Mhz.

I bought it just to try it out and as my first experiment with VOIP (voice over ip). It does work and after some effort I've gotten it to be pretty good. If you get frustrated easy and don't have the time and patience to read for solutions I wouldn't recommend it.

It is a great idea in my opinion but this company has zero business experience beyond what came in their Cracker Jack box. I think someone else can and will eventually do something like this much better.
