Define Unclassified Felony, or Unclassified Felony Life Sentence (as you understand it) and I'll try to be helpful.
Both phrases are Greek to me.

Unclassified felony and is serving a life seentence. I have no clue what it means or how to go about finding out what it means. The paroleagal in his cell says that its illegal to classifiy a felon to unclassified. on his final papers after trial it says a,b,c or d felonies and his is marked unclassified.I have no clue. So any information that you can find out I would love to know...Thank you so much... Also i have read alot that you have worte and I think you are a very strong to deal with everything that you have.......

My only thought on unclassified as a term in relation to a felony is that he's working on a PFO or Persistent Felony Offender, or Strikes in your neighborhood sentence..

If you get a lower felony, but it's your second or third... they will give you the next felony penalty range by virtue of the PFO.

I don't know that is what happened in your friends file.

but..

If a person gets a felony that carries 1-5 years (before trial comes up with the exact number of years...)
And once found guilty they go to the sentencing part and prove this person is eligible to be sentenced under a PFOish guideline...
That person would be looking at a 5-10 year penalty if they had one prior felony admitted into evidence by Prosecutor.
That person would be looking at the 10-20 year range if they had 2 priors admitted and the newest conviction was the 'third strike'.

On a resident record sheet/card it could say,
" Class D (lowest with the 1-5 penalty to start) -0- years.
PFO 2nd Degree 10 Years --(to serve)."
They'd come in pairs.. the actual case, and below it the only math is done in reference to the PFO (enhanced) sentence.

The point of reference for this is my KY experience, the land of the PFO.. People get 20 to Life over the third cold check.

Your mileage will vary.
And if he's got a bona fide paralegal in his cell, it shouldn't be a mystery for long.

(Thanks for the nod on the other point... I do what I can).
