Hello Kilby families & loved ones (or anyone who's had someone there recently)!

We could use your help in getting some updated info on visitation and other information on this facility.

As you have probably noticed, we gathered quite a bit of information for this facility some time ago, but we expect some of it is long out of date and now incorrect. The current sticky is here:

http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8450

We KNOW this one is way out of date because it's been many many years since our original reporter regularly visited this facility.

We need to know any changes/updates/etc - wherever the information is wrong or something new should be added, please let us know about it!

Especially concerned with:

- Visitation Hours (or a general idea of how their schedule runs)

- Visitation Rules (especially if there are some major differences from what you see there now)

- Rules for inbound and outbound mail (limits on pages of letter, envelopes, pics, etc., and how mail to the inmate should be addressed)

- What can be sent in or out through the mail (especially books, paper, envelopes, pens, etc.)

- Can they have stamps sent in, and how many and how often

- Whether there's any difference in the procedure for sending money orders in

- And any other info you think would be helpful along all these same lines.

Pretty much most of the rest, like general stats about the prison, we have access to, but we could really use your help in updating & correcting any of the info we have, and adding anything we might be missing that we should have.

So please let us know if things are pretty much the same at your facility, or if there's differences and what they are. Feel free to just add to this post as needed if you can help!

Thank you!

I don't know much but my fiance did tell me that they have new rules as far as mail:
You can have stamps... not sure how many.
On the back of stamps or pictures or anything sent, their AIS# MUST be on the back of whatever it is!

Oh and I'm 99% positive you don't have to be on their funds list to send money orders. I sent him one using westernunion.com and i was so worried he wouldn't get it and asked if i was on his funds list and he said that they don't make those till they get out of kilby.

I was told that we cannot send funds unless we are on the list. You may want to call Bibb about that????

That is true at all the regular "permanent" facilities.

Kilby is the reception center and where all inmates new to ADOC go, and most don't stay long and are transferred to permanent housing elsewhere, so things work a little different at Kilby since most are new and don't stay.

They can recieve up to 10 pictures in a single envelope. 2 books of stamps. 4 envelopes or sheets of paper. You do have to be on an approved funds list for permanent party, as well as visitation. Visitation lists can be changed every 6 months. The rules you have there seem to be pretty standard. If you want the most updated list though, as per DOC, I would go to their website which is doc.alabama.gov. Click on FAQ"S and go to where it says "How do I visit an inmate". There is a complete list of what you can and cannot do, etc. about visitation. There are also other questions with links to what can be sent in the mail. It is a very helpful resource to me. Also, Kilby is better than most about visitation, but all rules are the same for all facilities. I think it may be different for those at Kilby that aren't permanent party, but it would be best for their family members to contact because I think their days can differ.

Days do differ for people who just got thru their medical review and are awaiting to either go permanent party or head elsewhere. My brother is in permanent party and I visited him every sunday the hours are 8-1. (I believe this is the visititation for Dorms G-H-I.
