He believed he was a "prophet" of sorts and that he had insight to the "truth" that us "mere mortals" just didn't have the abilities to perceive and conceive.... grasshopper 11-07-2003, 12:17 PM My cousin had an psychotic episode years ago where he thought this. He ended up being hospitalized for a while but eventually with help he recovered. So far as I know he has been pretty much okay for the last 20 years or so since his 'crisis' happened. crstdrvn 11-07-2003, 06:25 PM I am a nurse and spent some time doing psychiatric nursing. When I worked with the mentally ill, people who had been non-compliant with their medications would sometimes think they were Jesus. It is a fairly common delusion among the mentally ill. Once they got some meds on board again, it would pass, and most of these people would have been mortified to ever think they had voiced these thoughts. This post is not to make fun of the mentally ill nor am I trying to be disrespectful (I have a heart for the mentally ill) but just to answer your question and let you know that this is the only time I have ever seen anyone think they were Jesus. Why do you ask, Kim? dawna 11-08-2003, 10:22 PM Not personally. One of my friends' cousins has schizophrenia and when she goes off her medication, she gets delusions that she is the reincarnation of Jesus and everyone who tries to get her to take her medicine are agents of Satan trying to destroy her. It's really sad :( Like the previous poster, I'm not making fun of her, I'm just stating what truly happens. Umm, if you look on the internet, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of people who claim to be the Messiah... 4keeme 11-08-2003, 11:23 PM crstdrvn-Thank you so much for your response! The reason that I am asking is because my brother (who I am ashamed is MY brother) believes that HE IS Jesus. He also believes that HE IS the "sun" (as in the thing in the sky that gives us daylight). I personally believe that he has some type of mental disorder/illness such as Schizophrenia. This sick delusion/disorder/illness led him to murder his friend of 12 years in a very brutal and violent way. He almost decapitated him and stabbed him 12 other times, then drug his body 100 yards and buried him in a ditch, covering him with tree branches. This happened on the victim's own property. His reason was because "he (my brother) IS Jesus, his friend was the "Anti-Christ", and he had to sacrifice him to save our souls". While he was in custody I found in his bedroom a Holy Bible (which I turned in to the Homicide Detectives) with a bunch of things he had written in it and some other parts he underlined and highlighted. He scratched out the name "Ephraim" and put the victim's name. The murder was followed out in detail to the parts of the Holy Bible that he had referenced. The Holy Bible stated something like "I will take you down with the sword, in your own house that you built yourself, and you will pay with your own head, I will then destroy your kingdom with fire or flood". The victim was a very successful Engineer and General Contractor with his own Construction Company. It took him 6 years to finish his most cherished accomplishment, his beautiful 2-story, 7,000 square foot home on 4 acres of land. That is where he was murdered and his body dumped-by my brother. Earlier that morning he let my brother wear one of his suits, and took him to his church (he was a Christian), and introduced him to his Pastor to try and help my brother because he was having problems. He tried to help him!! They then went to his home and had breakfast with the victim's 8-year old daughter. About an hour later my brother murdered him in cold blood, buried him in a ditch, and then proceeded to break a water pipe/line which flooded the entire home inside. Just like the Holy Bible had said. Then he drove near our home to a creek and buried the bloody clothes he was wearing. My parents are behind him 100% and believe that he should not even be in Prison. Sadly, MONEY TALKS-They hired a good attorney. He claimed "self-defense" (although he had no injuries). I testified against him. OUR SYSTEM SUCKS!! The attorney got all of the cold, hard FACTS of the murder omitted from jury testimony. My brother's violent past, satanic and witchcraft involvement, even his own confession on 3 hours of video tape with Homicide Detectives PLUS a 3-hour Polygraph video tape that he did not pass (but is not admissable as evidence) was not heard by the jury. It was clearly a 1st Degree, Pre-meditated Homicide but he got Voluntary Manslaughter, 7 years State Prison and $23,000 restitution. His release date is August 4, 2004. I am scared for my life and I do not know what to do at this point to protect myself and others from this very dangerous person-who is UNFORTUNATELY my brother. Sorry that this is so long-I must say I do feel a lot better getting this out of my system! I feel so alone-nobody understands! I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or comments. Thanks again- Kim G. crstdrvn 11-09-2003, 09:56 AM Wow, Kim, What a horrible ordeal for you, and for everyone else too. I'm so sorry. It sounds to me like your brother was very, very ill and very delusional when he did this crime. How sad. You know, schizophrenia is an illness, no different than diabetes. Just as the pancreas does not produce enough insulin in a diabetic patient, the brain does not produce enough of it's necessary chemicals in the schizophrenic. A diabetic can't help it that his pancreas doesn't work right and neither can a schizophrenic help it that his brain doesn't work right. I realize that this does not make it any easier that your brother committed the crime, and certainly you are justified in feeling fearful, but I just wanted to say that it sounds to me like he was really, really sick at the time of the crime. The other side of the mental illness thing, given his history of dabbling in satanic practices, is that sometimes people just plain are demon possessed. I really believe that. And there is a difference between demon possession and mental illness. However, from what you have said, this sound more like paranoid schizophrenia to me. But I am no doctor. And I haven;t talked with the man. Who knows what was going on with him at the time...it's not always easy for either the professional or non-professional without a solid spiritual background to to tell the difference between the two. For me, it's a thing where I have to be there, observing and interacting with the patient, and then it isn't always clear. Regardless, while you can't make your parents or the rest of the world safe from any potential harm when he is out, you do need to feel safe. If we're looking at paranoid schizophrenia, hopefully he is on medication now and will stay on medication. He will probably be hooked up with the Mental Health System upon parole, but just in case, you might want to talk with both his counselor at the prison and with your local parole in anticipation of his parole and share your fears and your desire to see him closely monitored by a Mental Health Professional, who makes sure he stays on an effective medication regime and that he is monitored closely for any changes in his mental health status. However, there are a million loopholes in the mental health system. It is not failsafe, by any means. So what can you do to feel safe? Do you want to have no contact with him whatsoever, or do you feel you will have to have contact because he is family? Let me qualify that by saying that just because someone is family, does not mean you have to interact with them. First and foremost, you need to take care of you. You need to be safe. And if that means no contact, then that is what you need to do. Only you can decide what you need to do to feel safe. Can you relocate, unlist your phone number? Even if you do have contact, it can be with family or other people present and you don't have to put your home at risk. Everyone needs a safe place. Can you tell him and tell your parents that you do not want to have any contact with him? If so, can you ask for a legal trail that says he is not to have contact with you? It can be made a condition of his parole, especially since you testified angainst him at the trial. Can you take a self-defense course? And because of the spiritual aspect of this, can you get involved with a reputable church and learn how to protect yourself spiritually from any demonic influence? And, while I don't mean this as an insult as you have been through an absolutely horrible ordeal...but as the time for his release nears, you may experince a lot of increased anxiety. That is normal. Perhaps some goods counseling would provide some support. Is that something you can consider? I am so sorry that you have had to go through this and that it continues to haunt you. What a frightening, horrific thing. I am sorry this is so long...not an easy thing to respond to in a few short sentences. Please know that you will be in my prayers, Kim. If I can be of further assistance, just let me know. toi_ama 11-09-2003, 05:17 PM Some people of an older generation are in denial about any kind of mental illness occurring in their family tree. I have an aunt who is schizophrenic and that's the case with my mother and the rest of the family. They were all literally ready to disown me for saying I'd sign commitment papers if this would get her the help she needed. She was trying to kill people. I've since worked as a psych aide and also had an adult foster home, so my experience with mental illness is pretty wide. The family just wouldn't admit she was mentally ill. They preferred to believe she was demon possessed and to allow a pastor of dubious reknown perform several "exorcisms". They weren't effective, needless to say. Anyway, I'm very sorry you're going through this. Try to understand that, although what he did was a very heinous thing, he truly believes he's Christ and that he's doing the righteous thing. My aunt believed the same thing. But it's their illness, which is an actual disease process of the brain that they can't help, which causes this. Unless he's treated in the future, he's going to present a very real danger to those around him, but hopefully when he's released, something will come about to get him the help he needs in spite of your parents. Personaly, if I were them, I'd far rather admit he's mentally ill and see him get treatment than see him spend any time in prison without treatment, but I know how it is to try to speak to closed minds in this case. |
