I'd take him for a nice sit down meal. Maybe something like Black Angus or Applebees. It's going to be a big difference from the prison's food!
8 years is a long time, have a great time!

MAYBE YOU SHOULD LET HIM DECIDE. SOME TIMES WHEN MEN ARE RELEASED FROM PRISON IT TAKES THEM A MINUTE TO ADJUST TO BEING IN LARGE CROWDS.

I wouldn't suggest taking him out to a restaurant. That can be a very, very awkward and embarrassing situation for someone who has been locked up so long. Maybe get some takeout-----you do the ordering for both of you after asking him what kind of food he likes-----and if he can't remember what kind he likes, just go for whatever you like. Then take the food to the beach or somewhere peaceful where you can eat without him feeling like he's going to be on display. In prison, shovelling food in fast is the necessity, and even with only you there, he might find himself doing that and being embarrassed.
The best thing to do would be to ask him what he wants to do first. It's possible he wants to go straight to where he'll be living so he can get settled in.
