Does any one know what the drug programs are in Ca? I was just wondering. My fiancee has been prison since 1994. His release date is 6/2005. But know they want him to go into the drug program. He was not commited with a drug offense. But as a minor he was charged with POS. When he was 15. Why are they waiting until know to send him to the drug program?

Sounds like a legislative quota to me, unless he has been busted for positive drug test in prison or possession (yes it happens). In another perspective, perhaps they now have the resources and are targeting any inmates with past drug convictions (even if one has been incarcerated for years, doesnt mean they don't need to address drug issues) but then I can't imagine CA is in desperate to fill drug programs as they have many addicts in the system. Sounds odd to me.

Are they going to release him early for completing a program? Some people do that to get out early even if they don't have a drug problem. I believe that inmates aren't eligible for the program until they are within 2-3 years of release, that's why it's coming up now as opposed to 5 or 6 years ago.
The problem for some people is once they're released they have a different set of standards than those who aren't labeled in the system as an addict/alcoholic. There are requirements for counseling, self-help groups, drug testing, etc. that they wouldn't have had otherwise.
If the time taken off the sentence outweighs the extra restrictions imposed on someone labeled as an addict then it may be a good thing. But if he is the type to buck authority or blow off his obligations... use caution.
I don't know enough of the details to give you a better answer, but please get as much information as possible so he knows what is going to happen.

I think that he will be relaeased early. In california they are doing a 6 month kick out program. He may have to go into a half way house or something like that but he is up to the challenage.

Programs should definitely do this for him, but his attorney must act on this right away. Other "good deeds" will also qualify, especially if they relate to his crime. Ashcroft has made downward departures more difficult so his attorney may have to really push for it, but make him! It is his job to do anything he can to minimize the sentence.
Good luck.

Yes, alot of my friends get out and have to do 6 months in a licensed clean and sober living facility or a rehab, I live in Butte County in california and a lot of the N numbers are haveing to go to rehabs then again the ones who dont have N numbers are also having to also go in to rehabs. There is one here called Cherokee House and another opne is Tri Countys, there are both licensed to receive our guys the day they get released. Good Luck to you both.

Do they still use 'N'? Years ago they used it as part of the prison inmates # to represent 'Narcotics'. I haven't seen it around lately, thought maybe they quit using it.
