RobinsMan 02-26-2008, 09:02 AM All I know is that on the one night that Robin stayed there she said it had a clean chow hall, decent food and the workers (male trustees) treated the gals with respect. I would keep checking because he may well just be passing through Goree on his way somewhere else.
coco4lopez 02-26-2008, 08:19 PM thank you for the information.:)
Sharm 05-02-2008, 11:46 AM mu husband was just transferred to the Goree unit from the Byrd unit. Does anyone know what its like there? I also need a mailing address for that unit. I havent heard from my husband for over a month. I know the mail takes a while to keep up with him.
thanks for any info I can get.
RobinsMan 05-02-2008, 11:53 AM Here is the unit address and phone number. However, if he's just moved from his old unit then he might just be passing through and will move again before any letter gets to him. You might call the unit and ask if he is still there (Robin had already moved by the time I called them) and if he is just passing through on the way somewhere else.

ReggiesLady 05-02-2008, 12:32 PM Most people just pass thru Goree. When a friend of mine was there a few months back he was not allowed visits because according to the unit they only had enough vistation for the ones that had Goree as their ID unit.
HeIsMyHeart 05-04-2008, 12:11 PM My best friend is in Goree. I didn't know he had even gone to prison. I have been looking for him for a long time, and finally came across info by Googgling his name.
Does anyone have info about what type of unit this is? I have read it is a transfer unit, but what about the one's that are there? Is it maximum security, and what exactly does that mean.
I know nothing about prisons so any information will be extremely helpful.
Thank you!
RobinsMan 05-05-2008, 08:07 AM I don't know much about Goree but just by looking at it when I drive by I would say that it isn't anything like a maximum security unit. It's an old unit. Robin stayed there one night when she was being transferred to Hobby and it ws the first time in almost a year that she had slept in a place with a window and she said it was so strange to lay in bed hearing night sounds such as crickets rather than the usual racket.
ReggiesLady 05-05-2008, 10:07 AM heismyheart- I don't believe Goree is a max unit. As Robinsman said, it's an older unit and it only houses a little over a 1,000 inmates which is small compared to lots of other units. These smaller units tend to be quieter from what I've been told.
BuggsBoo 04-03-2009, 09:10 PM Hmmmm, So I take from my reading these post that Goree is a transfer Unit.. My baby just got moved there fron C Morre Unit, prior to that he was in Gurnee all transfer units is this common?
Mark2008 04-06-2009, 03:52 PM Not officially a transfer unit, but basically serves the same function. it's where male ID unit inmates go to be classified and assigned to their ID unit.
Usually stay 1-2 weeks. Just stay in your cell all day except for meals and showers. I would put in request to go to law library just to get out of my cell and into an air-conditioned building in the middle of the summer. Actually learned some stuff while i was there, though, so it turned out to be a good thing.
No visits or rec allowed while "in transit".
BuggsBoo 04-08-2009, 11:27 AM But he's been in since January of 2007 and all he's been in is transfer units its confusing me. Does Goree have commissary? Can the get Fans, Radios, & Coffee Pots from there?
Mark2008 04-10-2009, 08:01 PM Yeah, if all he's been on up until now is transfer units, that is very normal. He's just been waiting in line and now his number is called.
They changed the property rules between my first and second trips to Goree to allow inmates to keep fans in their units because of the oppressive heat in summer (no air conditioning).
Goree has (or had) two separate commissary lists: one for the few permanent inmates assigned there and another for the inmates "in transit" that included just the basic survival items. Trust me, you do not want to be buying stuff while at Goree, because you're not staying there and it's a pain in the butt to move. So wait until you get to your permanent unit to make major purchases.
mandastarr 04-20-2009, 08:37 AM I went on Sunday for a visit and bri's in transit to unit with changes so he can finish his last 2 weeks of class. So call, they may let you have a visit. i got mine! And what a nice visiting area. So clean and the vending machines are way cheaper. I was in and visiting within 20 min. of arrival. Does anyone know of units in Huntsville that offer changes to regular inmates? Goree only offers it to trustees. And he can't make trustee.
