MONTANA State Prison, from Keichii, Lifer in Montana.
"Educational programs:
GED
Misc. such as typing etc. etc.
Vo Tec
OJT (low side only)
College courses either through classrooms or correspondence but inmate must pay for it out of his own pocket.
Library
We have available: books, magazines, copy cards, law library.
Medical:
We have a High Side and a Low Side medical unit. But we have many problems. Our current doctor is from India but for the last month he's been on vacation. We have what is called PA's who act as doctors and we have nurses but we have trouble keeping them. Under the new rules here at the prison we must co-pay for our treatment which means that if we want to see anyone, we must pay $2.00 a visit and this is only where some of the trouble is. If you want to see a doctor for anything you must first see a nurse, then you must see a PA and if both these people think that you need to be seen then you can see a doctor. For pain, say from serious head trauma or bad back trouble the medicine of choice is either aspirin or regular strength tylenol. If you are overweight and are sent to the Diet Cook, you are not given Slim Fast or any other type of diet food, you are told not to eat fatty foods even though this is our main diet here at the prison. "
"As far as the mental health goes, we have a doctor here but he doesn't like to give out medicine to people who need it unless they are on the mental health ward and most of them are already too far gone to really help anyway"
"Back to the mental health here at the prison. We have limited one-on-one counselling, and group therapy when you can get the doctor to show up. I do not know of any domestic violence classes here but they do have Sex Offenders Project for those about to be released----that is, if they can get into it. Or if they can go to the low side for the classes. They have many good lessons unless you are doing Life. Then they feel that you don't really need these classes and you are put on the bottom of the list since you aren't getting out, so many are never seen. We have Unit Managers and Unit Counsellors as well who are supposed to be here if you need to talk or have something that you need help withbut-----they simply tell you to kite or drop them a note and they never answer or tell you if you stop them in the hall that they never got the kite. As far as drug addiction rehab, if they do have a program it must be on the outside because we never hear about it. Lately most of the money spent here in Montana cannot be accounted for by the prison but it seems like they are trying to get the inmates to go off so they can say "see, we told you they were really bad people." They put up new fence and they put razor wire on Close 3 just last week for no reason. "
"As for religious programs, it is really great if you are Christian or Catholic. If you are any other group, then it is just like you are looking for a hope and a prayer. The Native American brothers have to fight for every scrap they get here, as do the Odinists, Satanists, Wiccans and some other groups outside the realm.
They are allowed to worship whenever they want because they have a priest or chaplain for these religions. What they seem to forget is the little things like freedom of religion and the fact that the Catholics and the Christians would not even have a church to worship in if the Native Americans hadn't gotten their people together to have the church built. And when we sweat sometimes at the same time the Catholics are having their chruch group going at the same time, the Native Americans are not even allowed to play their drum during the time allowed by the prison because it will disturb the Catholics singing. "

How many of you have already 'retired' a member of staff there? Outlasted the warden, or the deputy warden, or a Captain or LT of the guard? This question is just put here to get some sense of perspective... You'll notice a greater turnover in staff, over time, than inmates in the Liferzone.
