Are there any books out there that addresses prison life or how to cope while a love one is incarcerated?
I want to make sure I am in touch with his needs but not neglecting myself as well.

What ever you do, don't order this one. It is complete garbage. Not only is is wildly expensive, but the information contained within is years and years out of date.
I was at Victorville Med I, Lompoc USP, Lompoc FCI and the information for each of those facilities was incorrect. Most of the book is just fluff anyway. "There are 12 typwriters available for inmate use..." Who cares? And if you did care, would you be surprised when you got there and there weren't 12? It says that you can shop at the comissary in the afternoon and evenings, although that had been changed years ago if it was ever true. Again, who cares? Rest assured that there is a comissary and that you will be able to shop there. You won't need a book to find it, just follow your cellee.
The book says that:
Victorville doesn't have a UNICOR. -They rehab Humvees
Lompoc USP has a sign factory. - It was moved to the low 10 years ago.
Lompoc Low has a furniture factory. - Gone when they brough over the sign factory.
Lompoc Low has 2 man rooms. - There isn't a 2 man room in the entire place. It is all dorms.
That is just what I can remember. You are much better off looking on forums like this one. The book says that the low has an RDAP program. It is actually the camp.
Just a complete waste of $80 or so. The only thing we used it for was to see the addresses of the facilities. "Oh, hey look. There is an FCI in Oregon that is 20 minutes from my house. I think I will put in to go there."
My friends mom ordered one and kept arguing with him about the info. "It says that I can visit Monday's from 8 am to 4 pm...." When visiting can change at the whim of the warden. "It says you have vending machines there, should I send you some quarters?"

I've have and read the Federal Prison Guide Book by Alan Ellis. It is good information for location of facilitites and I'd say thats about it. It doesn't have much detail about the facitily and if it does it is "old news". It's good for before you go in~ to decide where to request but thats about it. If anyone is interested you can buy my copy:)
