Higher Education Help for Inmates

(Our thanks to Brandon Lagana from Ball State University for providing the following information below, which is offered as a starting point for those interested in pursuing higher education. The information, correct at the time of posting, may change or differ depending on individual circumstances and institutional policy. Be sure to contact colleges and universities directly for specific policies and procedures.)

Most colleges have a Continuing Education division (sometimes called Extended Education, Lifelong Learning), which tend to offer core classes (such as English, math, science, etc.) by correspondence. Visit Ball State University's Extended Education information online at: www.bsu.edu/distance/

Although most colleges do not offer complete degrees via correspondence or by Web, some do. It is important to ask before beginning courses. Also, make sure to ask if the institution is accredited by North Central or another accrediting body before enrolling or taking classes. Some schools are proprietary and their classes would not be transferable to institutions like Ball State University, the University of Delaware, etc.

Though the Internet may not be available to an inmate, the University of Phoenix (http://onl.uophx.edu/index.asp?deg=) offers degrees and most (if not all) of the classes are online.

As for higher education scholarships, visit: http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp

Interested parties may do a search based on a variety of factors. www.fastweb.com is another scholarship search resource. Avoid any scholarship search services that charge money to find scholarships. Ask about small scholarships from churches and community organizations (e.g., Kiwanis, etc.).

Ok, I am looking for legitimate resources on applying and finding business grants federally and State wise. I know of some programs for getting grants for developing a business in urban areas. Grants are non credit based, so I’m looking for those and loans built for people starting business that have bad or no credit. Any information on finding these grants will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
