I already emailed to make sure ex-inmates could do this. Here is the response:
In fact, apprenticeship programs are one of the best resources for people turning their lives around and I strongly recommend your son look into the state approved programs listed on our Web site. The entrance requirments vary based on the occupation and the level of skill needed, and many programs do require a clean drug test to get in, because apprentices will be working in potentially hazardous environments, like construction sites.
I hope you will check out two sources on our Web site:
http://www.dir.ca.gov/databases/das/aigstart.asp -- This is the database where you can search for apprenticeship programs by county and occupation. Check out http://www.dir.ca.gov/databases/das/descOfAppr.html and http://www.dir.ca.gov/databases/das/DefPage.html as well.
Also, we have a portal which tells the stories of apprentices in different fields that I think you’ll find useful and hopefully inspirational. It’s at http://www.dir.ca.gov/Apprenticeship/index.htm.
Best wishes.
